The simple FACT is you have no clue if that guy was racing you or if he reved, lit them up and watched you LAUGHING his ass of as you attempted to race him.
For all we know he decided to see if he could beat you by staying under 2500 rpm.
You were most likely driving away from a stop light as fast as you could, yet this makes you proud. You have no proof or casue to claim otherwise.

Although the sad truth that racing away from a stop light is somehow the highlight of your existance makes me feel I need to let you have your moment as any special olyimpics athlete should be allowed.

I drove one onthe same day I did TSX and the tranny is definitly not as good as the GLORIOUS CRAFT OF GOD that is the TSX tranny . Sorry love that thing. However the power band seemed well suited to the tranny although second gear was a notchy mess.

fracture...go test drive everything in the class and buy what feels best. i didn't even get to drive all the cars I was looking at because after I drove the MSP, it was like nothing else I'd experienced. Hence, I'm on this board and a total car nut now!

Hey all, I was just reading through this thread because I'm looking for a new dailer driver under $20k that is fun to drive, gets decent mileage and is realiable. I really like the look and stock features of the MSP's. I do like the 03's better I think just because of the fog lights and frint facia.

Other cars I've been considering are:
2002-03 Subaru WRX
Dodge SRT-4
Nissan SE-R Spec V

Anyway, I was really considering the MSP until I read this thread. Now I'm seriously scared and may stay away.

I have not driven a MSP yet and would like to know more about the "hesitation" issue. Is it just a simple turbo lag or what?? If it is a sputtering and missing engine then I would think that Mazda would get something worked out quick and send out recall notices. Also, what is the "clunk" issue? This seems like some kind of flaw as well if it happens in all MSPs.

Seriously, to me as an outsider reading this thread is looks like Mazda has lots of pissed off owners. This just puts another big question in my search for a vehicle. (sad2) Now the Scooby is looking even better.

I just happened to catch something about someone beating a WS6 with a MSP. I have no doubt that they are snappy little cars, but whoever that was that raced was being played. I don't care if the guy was blind and had never driven a car before in his life. There is NO WAY he was racing. Being a WS6 owner myself with plenty of knowledge of LS1 engines here are a few facts.

Stock LS1 equipted F-bodies run on average 13.2-13.5 @ 105+ in the 1/4 mile. A handfull have broken into the 12.9's stock.
The LS1 is WAY UNDERATED! Stock RWHP ranges from 290-320 depending on year and tranny with early years (98,99) being a little lower than the last couple (01-02).

So, I hate to spoil someones victory high, but just thought I'd clear that up. Maybe he was a poser V6 bird. Hell even those have 200hp and would be a good match for a MSP.

I wouldn't be freaked out at all though. the "hesitation" issue isn't on all cars(we don't know why) but Mazda of North America will be releasing the new ecu soon. No worries on that.

The clunk is an over-rated problem in my eyes. I've rode in my friends' MSP and MP3, both swear they have the clunk. I can't really tell. A lil noise when going over speed bumps shouldn't steer you away from the car. The driving pleasure from the MSP should take care of this worry.

A WRX and a MSP are tops on my list too, but I'd rather have the handling of the MSP and lose a lil hp. I'll take a 200whp MSP. With just a turboback exhaust, FMIC and boost at 10psi, it'll be a reality.

The hesitation is very common but somne do not have it. The cause is uncertian but the release of a fix actualy just happened today. The hesitation is when the car suddenly becomes offesly bogged down for no reason at all. YOu will feel it. I actualy was moved foward in my seat when I experienced it while driving an MSP. THe car goes form turbo protege to geo in a heart beat.

Your right the, MSP can not hang with a WS6 in any serious race. Lets not get into that one again here though.


Some people have had worse poblems then a typical 87 feiro owner. Others have had to make ZERO trips to the dealers for issues. FOr me the possiblies of alot of issues and wasted time is too great. If you have a great dealer then I wouldn't worry about it. I have nothing even close to a supportive dealer up here so I can not take the chance.

Well, I've always said and will continue to say that I will NOT recommend this car to anybody until my hesitation is fixed. If Mazda doesn't fix it within a reasonable time (not sure how long, but for sure no more than 1 year), then I'm selling this thing and getting something else. I'm not willing to put up with it when I bought a new car and expect it to perform as such. I beat the s*** out of my 2000 ES and never had a problem with it, so driving manners shouldn't matter IMHO. Add the hesitation to the coolant leak, the clunk, thin paint, wacky alarm, wackier radio, malfunctioning sub (note I've only experienced 'some' of these problems first hand)................it's just too much. You're almost guaranteed to experience 3 of these problems I'd say. If 3 of them are not a big deal to you, go for it and get the MSP while it has a rebate!

As much as I hate the looks of it, I'd consider the SRT4 if I was you - especially if you can wait until 2k4 when they come with the LSD stock.

Oh, and 1st, you forgot to mention that the Neon has FAR FAR superior seats compared to the MSP. The Neon's seats are INFINITELY better.

Now what does the SRT/4 have over the MSP.:
NO clunk
No hesitation
50+ whp
A more reliabile engine
A better backing by dealers and the manufacturer
A stereo that doesn't have to be reset every month
A suspension the retains its integrity for more then 3000 miles.
