What next?

:
MSP & MS3
Alright, I've officially caught the bug. I've got some money to play with so wtf?

Below is what I've done to my car (from a performance standpoint.)

Though I know there are still plenty of things that can be done... it seems like the "no-brainers" have all been checked off. What mod would make the most logical sense?

Dave B Rings (j/k)

Custom MSP SMIC
Injen CAI
Vibrant CBE Exhaust
Clunk Bracket Fix
kartboy shifter bushings
Unichip (stock settings)

I think that's about it.... if I forgot something it can't be that important.

You have essentially the same set of modifications that I do, performance wise. Assuming you have hardpipes, the add-on that went on my car next was a Coolingmist (http://coolingmist.com/) progressive water/alcohol injection system. A few months later I took my Unichip in for a custom tune. If you search this section (look for "Unichip + meets Dynamometer" or some such title), you will find my thread posted about a month ago describing the dynamometer results after the custom tuneit was well worth it to me.

By the way, the reason I mention the hardpipes is that they are necessary in order to properly mount the water/alcohol injection nozzle.

So we've got hardpipes, midpipe, intake manifold, steedspeed turbo manifold (whatever that is) and engine mounts.

I'm familiar with the benefit of hardpipes and probably should've gotten by now. They seem to be one of the simplest mods. Thing I have a hard time justifying is the ROI. Seems like they're a few hundred dollars... and, while there's minimal gains to be had, the real benefit seems to be in a more 'even' power delivery... which is cool.

Not sure I need a midpipe afterall. I thought I had a Vibrant CBE but it looks like it's the one that bolts onto the S pipe... making it the next best thing to a true turboback.

As far as bang for the buck is concerned, it seems like the manifolds might have an edge.

I found this on protegegarage... the gains look outstanding. http://mazda3online.web.aplus.net/product_info.php?cPath=281_32_163&products_id=260

Not quite sure what the difference is between that and this... but they both look to be worthwhile additions.

As for the engine mounts... I've never thought about these... mainly because I have no clue what they do. I just did a quick search and it looks like they're designed to help minimize the vibration from the engine. That sounds all well and good but... a must??? My engine doesn't seem to vibrate (at least to an excessive degree) so what would be the point of these?

Anyway... thanks for the help guys. I'm thinkin I'm going to put 1 or both of those manifolds on the top of my list. Along with hardpipes and some other minor stuff (like spark plugs and what not) my engine should pretty much be set.

Would love to get this thing dynoed.... For a car with a curbweight of about 2800lbs, getting around 200hp to the crank would be pretty damn sweet.

Well, your front mount and passenger side mount are probably torn. The rubber used from the factory is soft and tears easily.

Hey CHICO2003,

This is probably one of the best newb threads ever. You’re using "search" and asking good questions when you need to. Awesome!

Motor Mounts: Have you ever seen someone play music by rubbing their finger on the edge of a wineglass? The reason the wineglass rings is that the finger sticks/slips/sticks/slips as it slides along the rim. This finger vibration (the stick/slip) causes the glass to vibrate, and then, just like a bell when it vibrates, the glass rings. Well, in an automobile anytime you are letting out the clutch and anytime you lose tire traction to the driving wheels you are vibrating the drive train of the vehicle (stick/slip just like the wineglass). The vibration ends up squishiest parts of your drive train; the tiers, suspension and motor mounts. Makes sense, right? Well, these vibrations can get those squishy parts moving around quite a lot and then the sensation we all know and hate, called “wheel-hop”, occurs. This sensation is caused by those vibrations resonating with the drive train in such a way that they cause additional loss of traction. So reducing wheel-hop improves traction and I doubt I have to explain how cool it is to have more traction. Anyway, the point is, changing motor mounts can reduce wheel-hop. Motor mounts also reduce the amount of twisting the engine does when power is applied. Reducing this twisting makes power delivery more accurate and really improves the driving sensation. It also reduces the stress on parts connected to the engine that don’t move in the same way – like your hard pipes, exhaust, etc. Since the stock MSP motor mounts are extra squishy, this is an awesome upgrade.

The two manifolds you mention in your post are very different. The “Cast Single Runner Intake Manifold” is an INTAKE manifold (goes between the CAI and the intake side of the head) and the “Thunder Turbo Manifold” is an EXHAUST manifold (goes between the exhaust side of the head and the turbo). Yep, they both have the word manifold in their names, but one lets air into the engine and one lets exhaust out of the engine. You’ve already upgraded part of your exhaust system and part of your intake system, so taking the next step and getting a new intake or exhaust manifold makes a lot of sense.

To complete your intake system upgrades, you could get hardpipes and an intake manifold. You already seem to know where to go looking for these.

To complete your exhaust system upgrade, you could get an exhaust manifold, down pipes and a CAT. Now, there is a lot of discussion in this forum about the upcoming SteedSpeed turbo manifold which looks to be a promising (and sexy) product. It might even come with the option of SteedSpeed downpipes. Check it out here: http://www.mazdas247.com/forum/showthread.php?t=123686345

The basic rule for making engine power is to increase the volume or efficiency of combustion. Just like dynamite, the more you use (volume) or the tighter you pack it (efficiency) the bigger the explosion. Upgrading intake and exhaust will obviously effect how much air can pass through an engine in a given amount of time. That’s why tuning usually starts there! Bigger pipes = more in/more out (volume).

Hardpipes>Motor Mounts>Corksport 2.5 downpipe>Boost Controller>Intake Mani>Water Meth Injection(Preferably a progressive type system)>Custom Uni-Chip tune..

Could easily make 200whp with these mods. I have seen up to 230whp before with similar mods.

I agree, what i would do is.......

1. Hardpipes
2. MBC
3. Motor Mounts
4. Intake Manifold
5. Full exhaust upgrade

By this time you're gonna have to start upgrading other things to keep up with the power you're making and for better efficiency. So now you're looking at things like.....

6. FMIC
7. Custom Tune
8. Clutch & Flywheel upgrades (stage2 or 3 with fidanza or something)

and from here do cheap little things like T3/T4 turbo upgrades, forged internals with sleeves etc.

Depends on how much $$$ you have to play with. First I would determine what exhaust you have. If you have the Vibrant exhaust that connects to the S-pipe, that's great. If not, i say get a mid pipe.

Here's what I think you should do after that:

* Corksport S-pipe
* hardpipes
* gauges, wideband A/F, & boost controller
* engine mounts/inserts
* custom Unichip tune

Oh you mean in the other thread. I dunno. He asked about mods in this thread, that's all I was paying attention to.

ok like I said... before everyone goes talking about pouring thousands of dollars on this car.... didn't he say he was going to sell the car?

LOL Holy s*** man.... can't a brother change his mind???

As for the "thousands of dollars".... I guess I should've been more clear. No way in hell I'm going that crazy. I've flipped a few houses in my day and there's something to be said for over-investing. I've probably already done that with my car but, since I drive it every day and it brings me enjoyment, I can let it slide. But to pour thousands in... when I could have just taken that dough and put it towards a superior car... that just wouldn't make much sense to me.

So budgetwise.... I'll probably tap out at a grand (parts and labor) after it's all said and done. Famous last words!!
