I just hit 61,000 . i know it says 60,000 i drove across the country 2 times.. When did you all change your timing belt? And what did it cost? thanks!

Changed mine at 105K and had them save the old one. It looked good as new, although I'm sure it wasn't. BTW it's a calif car, the interval is supposedly longer, but i don't know why/how

Haven't yet but I'll be changing my 2003 at 57,000 or so. It isn't worth the risk. Had a Civic that was supposed to be changed at 90K and it broke at 92K. It had a non interference engine also but it still cost me almost $800 including the towing of $80. If you baby your engine with gentle driving you might get by but I autox so that's regular strain on it.

Mazda reccomenda checking the belt at 60k miles, and changing at 102k miles. It might be better to change it before 102k, but I don't think it would be worth it to change it before 80k.

Just my $0.02.

changing your timing belt before 60k is a waste of money....I have owned 8 cars, all different manufacturers, and I have never replaced a timing belt before 100k...never had a problem with any of them....if the maufacturer reccomends replacing it at 102k, then it should last to 120k.....they always tell you to replace it early, and if the belts consitantly died before 102k miles, then they would reccomend replacing it earlier......its just like people replacing their synthetic oil at 3k miles....its a waste....

although if it makes you sleep better at night, do whatever makes you happy(headbang)

No, Mazda only recommends inspecting it at 60,000. They recommend changing it at 105k. Here's the chart from the shop manual...

Ok cool thanks guys.. I have taken care of my car.. i trust it.. Do you know who much it costs? Also what should i do to the car at 62,000? change coolant, plugs, fuel filter? anything else?

There's been another thread about this recently (http://www.msprotege.com/forum/showthread.php?t=64752). I've seen estimates from $150 to $600, but I would expect a reputable dealer to charge in the ballpark of $250.

At 60,000 miles, Mazda recommends changing the spark plugs (also should have been done at 30k). The coolant should have been changed at 45k miles, so you should probably do that, too if you haven't. Mazda's manual doesn't mention fuel filters, but about every 45-50k should be good for that, too.

You might also want to get your clutch fluid checked if you haven't recently. I don't know when your Kartboy shifter and bushings were put in and if the transmission was serviced then, but if hasn't been touched at 60k, it's definitely time to look at changing that, too.
