What is this sound? Detonation?

:
GLA45
It kinda sounds like something metal rattling, almost like a loose heat shield or something like that, but it only happens under load in 4th and 5th gear at 3500+ (i've only taken it a little past 4k since this scares me) in 4th and 2k+ in 5th. It also only happens when the car is fully warmed up after travelling for a little while at those speeds. I know the engine is stressed more in those gears under those conditions, so this leads me to think it may be detonation or something alone those lines, but I've never heard detonation, so I don't know what it sounds like. It started yesterday, and then I drove last night for short distances and couldn't get it to do it, and then today I was driving around for a while and it did it again. I'm going to reset the ecu in the hopes that it just learned something bad since I hate our ecu anyways, but anyone have any insight into this? If I can get it to do it consistantly I'll bring it into the dealer, but hopefully resetting the ecu will fix it and there has been no long term damage already.

p.s.- my car is bone stock and only has like 5100 miles on it

What kind of gas are you running? At stock it shouldn't do that unless you got a bad tank of gas.

Hmm, dunno, I suppose it could be a loose heatshield or that plastic cover that goes over the valve cover (piece that says Mazdaspeed).

I'd definitely take it to the dealer if you can easily reproduce it.

i checked all shields, belts, covers, anything that could be loose, no dice. i'm going for a drive now to see if i can reproduce it. i did get gas from the same station both yesterday and today though, so maybe whoever put the gas in their tanks did it wrong. i might dump some octane booster in just to be safe with this tank and next tank go to a different place.

I had a sound that sounded like a broken piece of belt slapping something in my engine bay...it was in my old car and it only happened at WOT, I don't know if it was ping or not because I have never heard it before..but I can tell you that I blew my engine, so if it is the same sound that I am thinking about be careful.

Get it checked out if it continues. Could have been bad gas. Some naughty filling stations have been known to fill all the pumps with 87 octane from time to time.

i have a feeling it was the gas, i added some "off road only" octane booster and drove around for like an hour and it no longer sounds like a diesel truck. it's hard a little hard to listen though because of the wet roads and the winter tires, but i think it's solved. hopefully the roads will be dry tomorrow and i'll be able to hear better. at least now i know where not to get gas...

ya detonation, id suggest getting a bc and run lower PSI:D

you can't run lower with a bc, even with it fully opened it acts as a little restriction and makes you run more boost. to run lower, you need a different wastegate spring. but i'm not getting either because of things like this that might come up and i would need my warranty cause i'm poor
