I noticed this past weekend that the two wires (black/blue and black/white) leading to this plug were cut at the plug. It is the first black plug on the ground bracket just below the oil fill cap on the passenger side. There is a ground bolt for two wires then next to it is the plug.

I disconnected the plug and it didn't affect the car. I drove it for over 200kms, no CEL. Can someone please tell me what this is? Thanks.

Ground wire (I assume). I would suggest finding another grounding point though.

So the two wires that come into the plug are grounds for something?

Do you know for what? Why a plug to ground vs ring terminal with a bolt like the other one?

Thanks.

Bump.

Looking for confirmation. I checked for continuity between pins and ground and there wasn't any.

Can anyone confirm what this is?

You've unplugged the government mandated engine RPM tracking device. Only terrorists rev past 6k rpm. Keep an eye out for the FBI?

On a side note, you find an unknown connector on your engine and unplug it and drive around to see what happens?

disconnecting grounds is a good way to blow some fuses or worse.

Well thanks for the help. Finally broke down and went to the dealer over lunch to find out what it is. The guy at the parts desk didn't know what it was. He asked one of his mechanics who has an MSP to come out and look at it. He knew right away that it is a primary ignition sensor used only at startup.

It is not a ground, nor is it required for normal operation of the vehicle. He said that the car would run fine and wouldn't even trip the CEL. He then convinced the parts guy to sell me the parts from a terminal repair kit the dealership has. To replace it from Mazda would mean buying a whole new harness.

Why didn't I go to the dealer in the first place??? Because they don't really know much about the MSP. I went there for the clunk and they told me it was because I had an aftermarket exhaust that wasn't properly supported. They charged me $45 to "fix" the exhaust and the clunk is still there.

I try to avoid the dealer at all costs. Hopefully this will help someone in the future with a similar problem.

the plug is there for a very specific reason if i might say. its the TPS278 plug hole...its main purpose is fairly complicated. if you purchase a flux capasitator with an attached light sabed and hook it onto it with a G7 series fitment adapter it automatically ups your boost to 12 and ensures engine life to 250k....
