What is this hanging down from the car? Pic included

2008 Mazda 3, automatic. Fiends sent me this picture of their car. Front of the car is to the left. What is hanging down? Looks like a bracket holding a cable. All I can think of is shifter cable but I'm not sure if there is even a shifter cable around there. Thanks

Looks like a rusted out bracket to me.

that looks to be a broken bracket for a shift cable so you would be correct
