what happens to the center instrument panel display if i get an aftermarket HU?

what happens to the center instrument panel display if i get an aftermarket HU? can it still be used? is it also possible to use the steering wheel controls with an aftermarket head unit?

Not completely bye bye. I have a GT. The stuff to the left (trip computer) is gone, as well as the time. You can make the time work, but believe me it is more trouble than it is worth, especially since your new H/U will have a clock. The stuff to the right (environmental display) still works.

Temperature setting, fan strength, air outlet selection, A/C on, ambient temperature. Everything that shows normally with the automatic climate control system.

so if you buy the control box does it only let you keep the ac display and nothing else? or will the ac display stay even without the box? and i read that you have to buy another module to make the steering wheel controls work again is this true?

The steering wheel controls are history unless you buy an adapter.
Buy what control box?
I installed my head unit with a standard wiring adapter.
The display comes through its own harness that gets inputs from the climate controls and the factory head unit.
The trip computer and clock controls are built into the head unit so they go bye bye.
The climate controls are their own deal so they still display.

I forget the name but they do have adapters to use the factory steering wheel controls, but only certain headunits work with it from what i know. most alpine or pioneer do. so yes you need another adapter for that..

as mentioned above, all temperature control stuff stays without any other device..

the trip computer and clock / cd info etc wont show. Which cd info and clock you will have on the new hu... i barely bother with the trip computer so for me its a non issue really.

there is a jdm control box that comes with one of the more expensive double din kits. this box allows you to retain the clock and trip stuff.
