What happens if timing is retarded a little bit?

:
Yellow 2003.5 MSP!
A friend of mine did my timing belt and he couldn't get it top dead center so we decided that it had to be retarded because it is turbocharged. (I really just wanted to get it over with).

Has any of you done your own timing belt? How did you guys get TDC? Was it even TDC to begin with?

Anything will help. Thanks guys.

FDSE is an interference style motor. Not getting the timing set right when doing the timing belt could cause contact between pistons and valves. Not sure how far you are out, but its not a good idea.

I was under the impression it was a non-interference motor
I had my cams -12deg at one time due to not tightening my cam gears. No piston valve contact. Though the car wouldn't idle.

Hmm let me double check...

Not 100%, but the Gates Timing Belt Guide says it is interfence style. The overlap could be very minor though. Anyone every broken a tb on an fsde? Did it need valve work afterward? If so, its interference. Personally I've never tested to see how far out you can go with out contact, lol.

It off by only a few degrees and it been like that for a few months now. I dont think my pistons have been hitting the valves cuz it would have broken by now, right?

Should i advance my timing? what will that do? Will the "ping" or the ticking sounds do any harm? will it go faster?

iif you cant find the right timing, wouldnt it be better for a turbo car to have a more advanced(relatively) timing than retarded because there is more compression. you dont want you gas to explode before time.

Advance timing + boost can equal a blown motor without proper tuning.

By the way, I believe the Gates Timing Belt Guide is incorrect about our motor being interference. I did some more research and it looks like powerider87 is correct.

SO WHAT PIGGY BACK WILL ALOW YOU TO ADVANCE OR RETARD TIMEING i THOUGHT i HEARD THE SPLIT WILL ALOW YOU TO RETARD BUT NOT ADVANCE?

Yeah, I think one of the split seconds will at least let you retard timing. I know Unichip can do both, but its not really end user tuneable. That would not really be a solution to having the timing belt set up wrong though...
