Hi y'all, I am running a 01 protege 2.0 L in Dallas, TX. It is damn hot these days. My car has 66K on it, and I just use it regularly to commute. I like this baby and wouldn't force it with high hp. I wonder what type oil I should use in this hot southern city of Dallas, if I want to DIY. 10W30, 5W30...? I am not aiming at syn oil. Regular for my regular car.

i live in houston so its just as hot here.i would go with what the OEM says 10W-30 but it will take 5W-30 if you so choose.i wouldnt use it tho.

5W30 is recommended only up to ambient (weather outside) tempuratures of 105 degrees Farenheit or so. If it is hotter than 100 degree weather outside, i would recommend 10W30 which is rated for much higher tempuratures, it will protect your engine much better in hotter tempuratures, but it is also a thicker oil that increases drag on your engine components which equals lower performance. But then once the fall or winter hits, or ambient tempuratures drop, you can safely start using the 5W30 which should then increase your performance and gas mileage a bit.
