What do you do if your spouse/S.O. isn't a car enthusiast?

Two words:

Div orce.

Actually, I think like most things in relationships, it comes down to compromise. Figure out what level of car geeking he can stand, and just bring him along for those things that he's ok with. If he's ok with shows, but not autocross, just take him to shows. If he doesn't care for any of it, take him to the social events, like the party coming up after NOPI, but not to NOPI. If he's not ok with even the social events, see my previous two words of advice.

My wife is ok with the car geek thing in general, though she's nowhere near as into it as I am. Luckily, she's very into autocrossing, and meeting the other car folks, so she's down for coming along for most things.

Foolish, I hear you. It hasn't come up before, I suppose, because I didn't have the time (or the extra cash) to think about getting back into my car hobbies. He's really social, so maybe the party/meet-n-greet angle will work. He's originally from the Chicago area, and most all of his friends are still there, so maybe he can meet some new folks this way.

So, bring him to this and see how it goes. You'll both meet some new people, and perhaps he won't get to "car-ed out" due to the fact that it's a socal thing with car people, as opposed to a car thing.

This should be a good "get to know" event. I would not take him to, say, a dyno day!

Oh yeah, the other part of the compromise thing is that he needs to understand that you want to go to these kinds of things somtimes, even if they don't appeal to him, and he needs to let you go without him. Basically, it's keeping everyone happy. He won't be happy if he goes, you won't be happy if you don't and that's ok. You go, he finds something else to do, everyone's happy! Just don't ditch him all weekend, every weekend, or he'll have every right to complain about your hobby!

haha my gf doesnt last 10 min at a car event and im cool with that. she plays competitive arena polo and i have never even ridin a horse in my life, and dont ever plan on it. but we both make sacrifices to make the other happy. i go to her games and support her and she goes to some (2 so far haha) car things with me. i even go to watch her ride hunter jumpers and that is some boring s***, but it makes her happy. since we have been together she has learned so much about cars and can even tell you how a turbo works, what a charge pipe is, a vaccum leak(haha) and has even learned to drive stick which made her so happy for some reason.?? oh and she loves my car cuz its so ghetto and load which is a real fun factor for her. she has even dubbed the car "fluffy"..a nickname i still dont understand

I went to a lipizzaner show with my fiance once (g/f at the time) ...she still owes me for that one. Nothing like being surrounded by hundreds of horse-crazy little girls and their mothers. I had to be the only non-parent male in the entire place.

ya i really dont understand the whole horse and grl thing, but she doesnt understand why i like cars so its cool. and her games arnt ever really that boring cuz i get to cheer for her. and i love going to the games with face paint of her team colors wearing a shirt saying "GO EVA" and embarrasing the hell out of her. its funny to irritate the snobby rich fans drinking their wine and talking of the millions they just made..especially when i pull up in the only non $50K+ SUV, thats loud as hell and backfires like its choking.. haha i dont fit in in the slightiest.

Dude did you mean loud?

And she prolly names it fluffy b/c it keeps you hard for the camera.

do you really wear the facepaint? I'd love to get a wide angle picture of you in the middle of the crowd.(lol)@Danny

ya i mix those up if im not writing it on paper (dunno)...

well when i first got the mounts in it kept her "happy" she couldnt sit still it vibrated so much. haha u could hardly keep up a conversation with her she would be so distracted. probably why she likes the car.

Luke ya i really do that. those games r so boring for me to just sit there being so ADD. so i do it really to amuse myself. and there really isnt much of a crowd. more like 20 half drunk ppl sitting in recliners in a covered loft. i actually painted myself her last game and none of the parents on her team would even talk to me, they acted like i wasnt there. lol just how i like it.

RacerXGirl,
If you want to talk about it when I come down in a couple of weeks, I'll have a shoulder for you to lean on ;)

:p
