Actually, I think like most things in relationships, it comes down to compromise. Figure out what level of car geeking he can stand, and just bring him along for those things that he's ok with. If he's ok with shows, but not autocross, just take him to shows. If he doesn't care for any of it, take him to the social events, like the party coming up after NOPI, but not to NOPI. If he's not ok with even the social events, see my previous two words of advice.
My wife is ok with the car geek thing in general, though she's nowhere near as into it as I am. Luckily, she's very into autocrossing, and meeting the other car folks, so she's down for coming along for most things.
