I would never consider any trade in as a dealer discount. To me working out the price your dealer is willing to pay for your trade is a totally transaction than buying a new car from their lot. I would have worked out the price of the new car first and then discuss the trade in. Also, to make sure you have an idea what you can possibly get for your trade, I would look up the value on a site such as KBB or get values from places such as CarMax.

Agreed. We usually sell our old cars at CarMax or such, but if I were to trade, I would totally make the deal on the OTD of the car first. Even if they then lowball you on the offer for your trade you can get a price from CarMax which I believe is good for seven days which gives you time to take it to other places also if you like.
 
What ever happened to selling your own car? Why buy retail and sell wholesale? In over 60 years of car ownership I have never traded a car in. What's the point of going to all that trouble negotiating for new if you then turn around and settle for whatever the wholesaler offers you? Especially if you do it as frequently as some here do!
 
Personally I’m scared of meeting a stranger and what their nefarious intentions are. It’s not like 60 years ago. I have sold cars and a boat some 20 years ago. Would not even consider it now.

Not sure about your area, but here in IL we only pay tax on the difference. Also, with places like Carvana, CarMax, KBB and others, there's really no point in going through the hassle of dealing with strangers. We sold our CX-5 to a KBB dealer for what we would have received from a stranger. We didn't trade it in this time, because it was Tesla. They lowball trades so it made more sense to sell it outright first.

Yep! Because they get them with their "warranty". And it was only about 5% markup on our old CX-5.

Keep in mind that some people prefer not to deal with the hassles of tire kickers, serial test drivers, hard negotiators, waiting for credit applications to go through, scam artists, and so on. In the right circumstances, it may be worth missing out on a couple grand to avoid all of that and simply show up with your old car and drive away with your new one.
 
Just picked up a CPO 2025 Cx5 turbo signature with 3400 miles for $37,000 OTD in Maryland. The car is in excellent condition and leagues ahead of my 2012 CX9 grand touring ($36,500 otd in 2012). Already enjoyed traffic jam assist and MRCC on the drive back from the dealership. I don’t know if I can go back the the Cx9. lol.

Also, in some cases, the tax credits from trades are well worth it. Maybe less so in the lower price brackets of pre-owned Mazdas, but the higher the value, the more value in trading there is.

Couple that with your time and you have a decent argument to trade in with a dealer.

There is also a MASSIVE difference in tools and shop-ability for consumers to shop their trade values compared to the last 60 years. Consumers are empowered to get more money for their trades than ever today.
