I was at the street races tonight like they doing every weekend at night, and man, standing there when they fly by feels crazy, makes you wanna race, but also, you know in your head that if you race with a stock P5, you will embarass yourself like no other.

I don't plan on racing it, but I'm just wondering what cars you guys have beat and what you have done to your car.

Oh yeah, saw a two 3000GT VR-4s racing, it was insane, those cars are greeeaatt.. But this Civic hatchback was able to beat one, he must of had a bad ass setup to beat the VR-4 by about half a car I think.

Where do you go? You'll have to take me to check it out.

Geo Metro... well that may even be pushing it... and to think i gave up a 98 Trans Am for my protege 5, oh well

It's in South West Philly, it's crazy, over 50 cars come, and we just park on the side of this street that not much cars go through, then watch the races, man the cops came twice though, when they come, we all just run to our cars and zoom zoom off, then drive around for a little bit then we all come back to the same place and race again, then a cop car came again. Usually they get in about 10-15 races before a cop show up and flash his lights.

Mopeds, those razor scooters, the neato Segway personal transportation devices, golf cars, go carts (only some), 10 speed bikes, stationary objects and MOST parked cars.

vr4's = slow unless heavily modified, truthfully dont waste your time racing anyone in a stock p5, they run what high 17's? goto a local track for a night and see what other cars are running those times, maybe theres a 5500 lb suv you could race...

LOL a fukin Echo will beat out cars, we are ON PAR with a matrix XR as in.. exacaly the same time, we may be an Aveo, civics are on par, corolas are on par

Wow, forgive my techinical ignorance here, but what the f*ck makes our cars so damn slow?

I mean Echos? Aveo? I don't know if that was a joke, but damn, the Aveo has what, a 103hp engine? (was at a Chev dealer the other day and thats what the sticker said anyway).

I bought the P5 because of handling, looks, and price (in that order), so this isn't any shockwave or anything. I knew what I was getting (and what I wasn't) when I bought it.
But anyone wanna explain to the less technically inclined exactly what it is that makes the Mp5 so slow as compared to similarly priced/equipped cars? Namely the:

Matrix
Civic
Focus
Golf
(anything else?)

I hear that. I gave up a 2000 Mustang GT because I thought the insurance might be lower and the milage better.
(bang)

Mainly when you are dealing with similar powered(or underpowered in this case) cars its gonna come down to weight. but there are other factors, like gearing and driveline.

The Matrix is just about the same speed.
Civic - depends on which civic you mean but the older ones are lighter than a P5, so theres a reason they might be faster.
Focus - The focus I had as a rental had to me what seemed like very short gearing, Short gearing equals little quicker giddy up.
Golf - Depends on the model. Golfs are suprisingly heavy but MOST have 1.8T engines(or better IE VR6, R32) and if I have to explain how a 180 HP turbo car can beat your 140 HP N/A car I think I better just give up.

our p5's have a crappy engine, HP is what makes you move fast and we have very little of it for the car's weight, an aveo and echo can kick our ass because they only weigh in at friggin 2000 lbs. civics can kick our ass because they have vtec LOL (seriously though) if our cars had VVT we would basically have the mazda 3 engine and if ti was tuned to rev high we would get 100hp/L and have the same torque. its always better to rev high as you can tune the gears to match. the more tQ you multiply by RPMs the more HP you have

which is why a civic Si with a 1.6L can run mid 15's stock and ours run mid 16's stock

To that idiot Mazda engine picker, whatever you call yourself, you should get shoot or go to Japan and learn why the Japanese engineers designed a 170HP engine and AWD for a P5 instead of a freaking 130HP engine FWD. I swear, whoever picked this engine should be shoot because they difinitely didn't know what they were doing.

I would imagine a stock P5 could win a race against any of the base models of these cars.

i imagine my P5 could win against a bunch of cars.. but that's just it. i have a great imagination... hahahaha.

Anyone can drive fast in a straight line. I can almost guarantee if you want to beat these cars, find an autocross in your area, and take them on the track! Our cars stock, will run great times in autocross! Best part is it's legal, and it's ass loads of fun!

Civic SI's wish they can run mid 15 stock.. lol. The P5 wasn't made to drag.. it was made for handling. Haven't you guys notice how the P5s can outhandle Civics like it's nothing?

As for the Matrix comment, which model are you comparing the P5 to? XR, XRS, or the 4wd XR?

The XRS runs on the Celica 1.8L engine..

We have higher torque and hp figures than most cars in our class, and we also don't weigh much more.

The reason for our cars being slow is DRIVETRAIN LOSS. The 1.8L 1ZZ-FE engine in the Corolla advertises 130hp and 125 torque, but makes about 125 and 115 to the wheels respectively. The published figures maybe underrated at the crank.

The FS-DE on the only hand publishes 130hp and 135 torque, but only dynos at 90-100 and 110 respectively. The drivetrain loss is pretty significant...
