- 03' Silverado, 03' P5
Well, we had another test and tune night tonight at the 1/8 mile track by my house. This time they were so cheap they wouldn't even turn on the tree (I won't argue with no fee though). Anyways, I put my name in for this weekend for my P5, when they'll run everything, including the clock.
I live exactly 1.2 miles from this place, and decided to take my truck first just to see if it is working like normal. The way it worked without the tree was we had a guy out at the starting line waving us off. Kind of like street racing I guess, without the street! At any rate, I met some younger people (~16 or so) that I talked to a while back about the P5 (in the grocery store parking lot after they approached me asking about it). One of the guys just got a brand new white 2002 Civic Si for HS graduation. It was like he was a demi-god or something, all the guys out there drooling over that funny looking little thing. I was more interested in a 1988 Toyota celica All-trac that had just pulled in... (What a damn sleeper). Anyways, the guy in the civic remembered me, and walked over with about a dozen other guys in tow. He looked at the truck and said "That thing is loud, I bet it's slow though... " I smiled, and replied with "Wanna see?". It almost scared me when all the guys with him busted out laughing... loudly, I might ad. I was on fairly new street tires, and didn't even have the N20 bottle in the truck, but I figured what the hell. My last N/A runs were in the mid/high 14's for the 1/4 so I figured it wouldn't matter. We aren't supposed to bet or anything out there, but he offered to try it for $20. I agreed only on the terms that he wouldn't go apeshit and get himself hurt or anything.
One of guys wanted to ride with me, so he could "Watch me get stomped from my point of few" in his words. It took about 15 minutes to finally get through the line to stage... They hadn't turned on the water box luckily, since I usually only manage to partly avoid it anyway. He wanted to spin a little to heat his tires up so I obliged... It lasted about 1 to 2 seconds and ended by him stalling the car... People were still mesmerized by that thing, even with his lack of skill. Weird...
Not to be outdone, I did a little brake torque to about 1,800 PRMs (Incidentally where the torque converter works its magic.
) And let all hell break loose. With the tires at normal pressure (I am a dumbass) I spun both about 100 feet or so, and managed to keep in on the straight somehow (I love 3.73 LSD 12-bolt chevy rear ends.) The guy in the passenger seat asked if that was normal, and I told him it usually would spin less... He didn't seem very relieved. By the time I backed back into position, the people at the starting line were silent, and the guy in the civic was looking a little pale. When we finally started it was not really any surprise. The civic had a really solid launch and did really good for about 30 feet or so. I launched from a dead stop with no brake torque, at about half throttle until ~10 MPH. I caught him about 20 MPH and pulled pretty well from then on. 2nd gear in my truck hit hard enough to break the rear-end loose and spin for about 10 feet... the guy riding with me thought it was the coolest thing he had ever seen. I guess I had about 5 or 6 carlengths on the civic at the finish, hell it was pretty dark down there, it might have been more. It was pretty damn fun, and the kid was a good sport about it... even with a little teasing from his buddy that had ridden with me.
I didn't take his money, and just told him to practice up his driving, as he could have done a little better when shifting. All the younger guys asked a lot of questions before I left, mostly as to how a truck could beat that "sports" car. I said I was just lucky I guess... lol. Too bad it started raining before I could go home and get the P5. Anyways, I had an encounter with the "almighty" Civic Si and figured I would share... It amazes me the reputation that thing had with all the younger people. Oh well... Later.
