Went shopping today, how does this deal sound?

I found a couple in Silver Spring, MD. Both are Grand Touring, which is the trim model that I want.

One is a base-level, no extra options. They wanted $20,900, invoice is $21,698; so $800 below invoice. This is the one we wanted. Right color (blue), and we can add in the options we want. The price is also right, really don't even need to negotiate it down except the add-ons.

They have another that includes Navigation, auto-dimming home-link mirror, remote start, and Sirius radio. They wanted $24,200, invoice is $24,262; or $62 above invoice.

The local dealer had nothing we wanted. They also said that since the other dealer is selling that blue one at $800 below invoice, it wouldn't even be worth them going out to get it and selling it to me, and that I'd be better off just going down and picking it up myself.

However, this local dealership also offers a LIFETIME powertrain warranty, which I feel is important to have considering my wife will eat up the factory powertrain warranty in 2 years (60K miles). I asked him what he would need to sell it for to be worth selling here; so that I could get the lifetime powertrain. A couple trips back and forth to the other sales guy on the floor, he tells me that for Invoice + $500, they will get it here (which is their job anyways), and then I can have the lifetime powertrain.

Invoice + $500 = $22,300, which is still not horrible I don't think. I told him there were a couple options I want to add, and he agreed to give those at cost (Sirius, homelink auto-dimming mirror w/compass, and the rear bumper protector.

Cost of these options:

.......................MSRP....Invoice
Sirius................$430.....$344
Mirror...............$275......$220
Bumper cover.....$50.......$40
--------------------------------
.......................$755.....$604, so about $150 cheaper.

What EXACTLY is invoice? I don't think that selling less than Invoice is a loss, is it? These guys wouldn't even work with me for it below invoice, since they didn't have it on their lot, said it wouldn't be worth driving out to DC to pick it up for $800 below invoice, and I'd be better of to just go there myself to get it. But, I want that warranty.

Thoughts? Am I playing this right?

Thank you.

I think that the chances of ever needing the powertrain warranty are slim to none, but I won't talk you out of that if you really want it.

Don't get caught up in invoice cost and whether or not they are making money. They are making 25% - 30% on the car. But if you think you are going to get the car for less than they are paying for it you are wrong.

In the end, just pick a price that you are comfortable with and buy it.

Good luck!

Hopefully will not need the powertrain warranty; but I don't really trust automatic transmissions. :) It will probably be fine, but, peace-of-mind is a great thing when my wife has a 100 mile/day commute, some days 180 miles; and I will be coming and going to Iraq/Afghan. I just don't want to have to worry about it while I'm over there. Figure at 24-30K miles/year, that powertrain warranty will be done in 2 years.

When I showed them the other dealer was going to sell it for $20,900 ($800 under invoice), they basically told me I'd be better off just going there to get it. I guess I would be paying a little more at this one for peace of mind I guess.

I just want to make sure that the prices that I'm saying here are reasonable. I'm sure that I could play the game a bit more, and get a bit more off, but I'm going on vacation for the next week, and heading back overseas a few days after we get back, I just don't have the time to haggle off a couple hundred. :(

OK well I'm aggravated. They were supposed to have it here around 9:30 this morning. They called me to let me know they were going to get it, and to be there around 10ish. Got there around 10, and they hadn't left to pick it up yet, and won't have it there until about 1pm, so, I'm kind of ticked off.

This should at least be worth some all-weather floor mats and oil changes right? I mean, I'm on leave, waiting to leave town, and they're wasting my god damn time at this point.

LOL

That Red Sox girl of your avatar saves the day ;)

j/k, let us know how it goes, the only thing I can say that unfortunately the actual car purchase and delivery experience sometimes is not as good as you expect (my 06 purchase process was sloooow and we noted some paint damage upon delivery that was corrected on its 1st service. Regardless, the deal was worth the wait. The 08 one was much better, but different dealer and I closed the deal at 9PM on a Monday in December, so go figure)

Haha...love the Sox girl. :)

Finished the deal with the Mazda 5. Wife loves it, I like it, so, can't really complain. With the back seats folded down, there's plenty of room for the dogs back there, some luggage if needed, and the rest that we took with us. Of course an Odyssey/Sienna/etc would be roomier, but, gas mileage is not as good as this, and driving it 100 miles/day, is something we had to consider.

The thing handles great for what it needs to do, acceleration is "peppy", no problems keeping up with traffic, merging, passing or anything of the sort. Good ride, wife looked down and didn't realize she was doing 75-80 mph. The Bluetooth is a badass feature, we have to program the phonebook to make it easier, but the voice recognition is phenomenal, don't have to slowly sound out each number.

We averaged 29mpg on the way up to Mass., which I really love about it. The headlights are excellent, once we figured out that there's a knob that controls the 'leveling' of them. HID/Xenon or something like that.

I can't remember what else right now, but it's a great vehicle which hopefully lasts a long time.

Sharp looking front end, not "mini-van-ish" at all.

I hope to find a better rear cargo tray like they have for the Mazda 3, but, enough room for them.
