Washer Fluid Pump

Just curious to know if anyone has needed to replace their washer fluid pump? Mine seems to be malfunctioning after filling the tank for the first time. Very little liquid is pumped out and never is enough pressure to make it onto the windshield. Interestingly the back washer fluid works fine. Also, when I pull the lever for the front fluid, some liquid comes out of the back. Any ideas what this is before I make the trip down to the dealership?? I can hear the pump trying to run, as it makes the humming noise so it isn't a fuse issue. A strange problem to have with only 3,800 miles.

Could just be the nozzles are clogged. Try gently twirling the tip of a pin in them. This also works to re-aim them if they spray the wrong way.

Not a strange problem at all. The cars are shipped empty of non-necessary fluids; one of which is windshield washer fluid. The delivery prep is supposed to include filling the container AND PRIMING THE PUMP. It looks like your dealership missed this step. I'd take it back and have them do their job.

If you're not happy with your dealership, tell Mazda NA not to pay the warranty repair bill as the dealer turned a delivery prep item into a warranty claim as a means to get unwarranted money out of Mazda.

My problem is the opposite - the rear just dribbles out. Is there a rear pump and does it need to be primed? My dealer missed a few things on my car so I would not be surprised.

I wouldn't call what mine does dribbling, but it slowly flows, and certainly does not spray. This is what my Protege5 did, so I feel it is normal.

Update: I finally found time to go to the dealer for them to look at the fluid issue plus my fog light was out. It turns out the fog light bulb and the sprayer hose were both damaged as a result of road debris. I was hit by a small chunk of semi-truck tire a couple weeks back (for the second time in this car) and it caused the damage of both the bulb and the hose. $175 later, it is all fixed.
