Warning! DON'T use Kartboy Hangers with Ion Exhaust

Talk to Jack, my hunch is that his Urethane hangers are softer then the kartboys. The Kartboys are extremely stiff.

The reason the stainless on the rear section is ripping is because it's aircraft grade stainless, so it's very light. That's why the Ion exhaust while being 3" piping and still stainless steel is significantly lighter then the stock exhaust.

Just to be safe I am going to put stock rubber hangers back on and live with the exhaust moving around.

Well that settles it. My stock hangers are going back on at least the rear section.

Actually the problem is with the manufacturing of the hangers on the exhaust system. if its unsupported rod that is just welded on the tubing/ can all will fail over time. The correct way to manufacture a system with hangers is to triangulate the hanger so there is both compression and tension holding everything together.
let me look for a picture of it.

i've had them on my turbo RS that i made a full Ti exhaust that was paper thin with 0 problems in 40K miles. also if they overheated the weld it will loose all the strength.

If you have a flex pipe, it shouldnt add that much stress to the exhaust. I believe that in the article in Turbo mag the ion turbo back doesnt have a flex pipe?

really? no flex in a trubo'd exhaust? now thats asking for trouble IMHO!

things tend to get a little hotter with one of dems hairdryers

aircraft stainless is strong s***. my buddy and i were fabing up a peice for my gauges, and it kept stalling out his drill press (sure it was a high grade drill press) but its strong s***. no offense to ion but it sounds like their hangers and welds. alot of mp3/proteges have been running kart boy exhaust hangers for a few years with no problems.

tom@kartboy.com - Actually the system has a ball-socket joint that utilizes the factory spring bolts to allow for flex. The rear muffler hanger is supported via another 1/2" SS rod which triangulates the hanger to add extra strength. We have noticed that depending on the hardness of urethane that's chosen; the excess vibration transmitted will eventually cause damage overtime.

UPDATE:

Got my exhaust fixed today. The only place it was actually leaking was on the rear hanger that goes into the stainless steel pipe. (This one had practically seperated from the exhaust) The one that was trinagulated on the muffler itself were fine. The hanger by the front cat section was also fine.
