Violent Shudder at Takeoff

I bought this car in August of 2006 with ~60k and this is a problem that's existed since I've had it, although it seems to be getting slightly worse recently. Basically what happens is when I take off from a stop at a normal rate, the car shakes and shudders violently. It's almost as if I don't know how to drive a manual, even though I've been doing so for 12 years. What's interesting is that this only really occurs after a period of spirited driving, or after I've been on the highway for a while and then exit to stop and go traffic (this is more common). It doesn't ever happen within the first 10-15 minutes or so of driving, or if I'm running short errands. I can make it not happen by bringing the revs higher than I normally would and riding the clutch, or giving it almost no throttle at all and taking off from a near stall. Anybody encounter this before? Advice? Thanks in advance.

sounds like my clutch shudder, except for the violent part. mine shuddered all the time. it was slightly annoying, but i got used to it. do a search for clutch shudder to see if it's the same.

My '03 with 62k also does exactly the same thing...Doesn't it involve replacing the pressure plate to fix the problem?

there is a defect with the clutch material/design when the car was built.... over time it worsen to make hot spots on the flywheel... it happened to me too until I got rid of all that stock s***... so the only way it's getting fixed is a new clutch and flywheel

So I need a clutch? Sweet, that's going to be real fun. I did search a bit, but I guess I used the wrong keywords. It looked to me like it might be motor mounts, but that didn't make any sense to me, which is why I posted. Now I get to search for how much of a PITA this is going to be.

Subbin. I too have a rather rough shudder on take off. Let us know what you do. I plan on doing a hiboost kit in 2 years, so, a new clutch may not be a bad idea soon. Stage 1 sound good? AND, I'D LOVE a new flywheel!!

dude, bad motor mounts are NOT going to cause a clutch chatter/shudder
I've driven cars with holes in the motor mounts and it didn't shake like hell on take off... the motor did rock a whole lot but that's a completely different story

I know you want to dismiss this bad news, but reality is, the clutch and flywheel is bad and that is the only way it'll ever get fixed

I know motor mounts wouldn't cause what my car's doing. I saw something similar in my searches though and that's why I said it didn't make sense to me. The good news is I live less than 5 miles from work, so this is rarely an issue. I'd just like to find the most cost effective way to go about fixing it while still getting decent parts. I'll probably go with that Mazdaspeed flywheel Corksport has with an Exedy stock replacement clutch, unless I come across a great deal on something else. I don't have huge power goals for this car. You're in Dallas- wanna help? ;)

Ha, I was about to post a thread about the same thing. Mine does the same thing bad, at first I thought it's b/c I'm a new stick driver but over time I realize it's something wrong with the clutch. It gets really annoying at traffic as I have to slip the clutch to take off every 10 seconds. I think the shrudder occurs when the clutch is hot due to slipping. Once it starts shrudder it will get worse faster and faster and I have no choice but rev up higher. In the end in a traffic after about 10 minutes I have to reve to at least 2200 rpm to take off. The only thing that helps is to let it cool like cruise on highway for a few minutes or so.
The car has 88k on it and my friend said clutch can usually survive for more than 150k, but I guess the previous owner drive it hard.

So it seems replacing flywheel and clutch is the only solution.(How about pressure plate?)
So how much will it take to do the whole thing? Can anyone give a estimate?
And how much more can I drive before I will be forced to replace it? I don't wanna spend a whole bunch anytime soon.

how much would it cost me to have mine replaced if ever? what brand can you recommend? thanks

Wow i have the same issue and i thought it was me,but i guess its good to know to change the clutch.Any one got any ideas on a good racing clutch?

I too thought this was because I was a new clutch driver. My car only has 55000 miles on it. How long till I need to replace the clutch?
Also, I noticed a 70-75 mph shimmy/shake. Has anyone else noticed this? (I'll search the forum regarding this issue to.)

Thanks,
Halee

is the shake transmitted through the steering wheel? May just need to balance your tires.

In regards to the shudder, you probably won't need to change it, it'll just keep doing it until you do. I have a feeling now that it's getting cold, it'll have some effect on how bad it is.

Ever felt a car buck when you take off without enough throttle? Like that times 10. Mixed with the feeling of severe wheelhop. It's horrible, but thankfully I only experience it once a week at most, and I can force it not to happen if I need to so it's not a huge deal.

man that's nuts, i ALSO thought it was me and my inability to drive manual but you guys are reassuring me.

so really, a new flywheel is needed to fix this? that's menarded.

Buying New Clutch?

I want to get my clutch shudder fixed so what is the best route to follow:

1/ Stay with original parts or go with an after market product.

2/ I'm not an aggressive driver, but I'd like a smoother shifting clutch, like what's in the Mazda 3.

2/ Is it better/cheaper to order the parts online, then get a garage to install it, or is it better to contact a performance garage, and have them do the complete upgrade.

I'm not planning on selling the car, so this is something I'm going to have for a while.

Get a Spec clutch. The price is reasonable ( U.S $260 ). The labor is where it will cost. Check a few shops for pricing on labor.

here I thought it was only mine that did that from the get go

the car has always done it.

i've driven many different standards and my car is the only one (and all other P5's apparently) that does this

ride the clutch!!!
