2010 mazda 5?

anyone have any news on the 2010 Mazda 5 yet? I've been searching the web for any info as our lease is up next January and wondered if the '10 model will be substantially different. Only thing i've found is the possibility of a new model called the CX5 replacing the 5.

I have yet to see any official releases for the 2010 Mazda5.

However I think it goes without saying that the 2.5L engine will also find its way into the 5, as well as stability control, and a power sliding door option.

yeah, agree, maybe 2.5L and ESC yet some old news state a major Mazda5 revamp until 2011. With the economy as it is plus considering how small is Mazda, I think it will be the case:

For its upcoming cycle of vehicles, Mazda wants to replace its entire powertrain lineup.

By 2015, Mazda will have given its gasoline engine lineup direct-injection spark ignition and idle-stop technology to improve fuel economy.

But it's more than just engines that Mazda is improving. Each new platform has a weight-reduction target of at least 220 pounds less than the previous vehicle platform. Although Mazda and Ford have worked together on platforms and component sets, Mazda is expected to show more independence from its controlling shareholder in terms of product offerings.

Mazda2: With the small-car segment hot, there is a sense of urgency to bring this car to America. But the four-cylinder engine that Mazda has certified for other models is too large for the engine bay, and the engine that fits the Mazda2 hasn't passed U.S. tests. Expect a 2011 model year introduction.

Mazda3: The restyled, re-engineered Mazda3 will debut in spring 2009 as a 2010 model. Mazda will keep the two-engine strategy, with small- and larger-displacement four-bangers. Look for Mazda to offer features frequently available on more expensive cars.

Mazda6: The redesigned U.S. Mazda6 sedan, arriving in dealerships this summer as a 2009 model, no longer is a world car. The North American model grows 4.5 inches in wheelbase and nearly 7 inches in overall length to become nearly as large as the Honda Accord. The engines are larger, too, with a 170-hp 2.5-liter four-banger and a 272-hp 3.7-liter V-6. The hatchback and wagon have been dropped.

MX-5 Miata: The tough economy has deleted any chance of a MazdaSpeed edition. What's more, any redesign of the current model has been pushed out to the 2012 model year, meaning it is on a seven-year cycle.

Kabura: A compact, sporty coupe derived from the rear-drive MX-5 platform is on the "most wanted" list, but Mazda in the United States needs Europe or Japan to sign on for volume to justify the program. Mazda may wait for the next MX-5 platform to launch the coupe derivative, meaning the 2013 model year or beyond.

RX-8: The redesign is far off--the 2013 model year. The rotary engine will grow from 1.3 liters to 1.6, the first displacement increase since the engine debuted two decades ago. Mazda promises better fuel economy and more power.

Mazda5: This mini-minivan was on the U.S. hit list until gasoline reached $4 a gallon. Now it's a star. Look for a redesign for the 2011 model year.

Tribute: Mazda's version of the Ford Escape likely will expire at the end of the current model cycle, if not before, to make room for the CX-5.

CX-5: Mazda will share the European Ford Kuga underpinnings and combine it with a design based on the Kazamai concept from the 2008 Moscow auto show. The CX-5 will be smaller than the Escape; Mazda wants to avoid cross-shopping with the CX-7. It may arrive for the 2011 model year.

CX-7: The 2009 CX-7's automatic transmission has been recalibrated for smoother shifts. Customer grumblings about the thirsty, peaky nature of the engine will result in a nonturbo version with better fuel economy arriving for the 2010 model year.

CX-9: Interior upgrades are expected for the 2010 model year.

B series: As long as Ford makes the current Ranger pickup, Mazda gets the B series. That's two more years at least.

I found this sketch on the 2010 Mazda 5 that I saved a while back. I can't remember what website I found it on, but it looks like they'll be incorporating the smiley face on it as well. This design hasnt's been comfirmed as of yet, but seeing that the 2010 Mazda3 and 2009 RX-8 both have smiley faces, I think it's highly probable it'll look somewhat like this.

Personally, I think it's too soon for a redesign. The 2008 looks good and I think they should continue it for atleast another year or two. I think they should hold off until 2012 for a full redesign.

I especially like the white star wars storm trooper styling.

I've got two boys that are probably going to be in the 6'2" -6'4" range, so if it ever comes to the US, it would be something I'd consider to grow into.

The Biante is not ugly in person!

If you are Japanese of course ;). That car is a hit over there undoubtelly, but I doubt it can become a global model, too much going on and a very JDM design (and don't take it wrong, I like the Japanese culture, and its food too :D)

I think it's ugly and so do most people, but I can't really speak for them. I'm just going off of reactions when it first came out. I know if they tried to bring it to the US, it would fair too well. I do agree that it isn't a global model. It just doesn't appeal to everyone. But if you like it, that's cool.

nah. Its definitely on the extreme side for a japanese design, and owuldnt sell very well in the states.

Even if it's not the Mazda5 replacement in Japan, the Biante looks to have similar dimensions as the 5. If it's a 6 passenger car, I think a "calmed down" version could be a new 5. Furthermore, it looks a lot like the sketch in P2K's post.

And I love Japanese culture too!

i asked this same question to an insider who said the new redesign proposal of the 5 was deemed so "silly" by focus groups that they had to go back to the drawing board. so we won't see the new one till at least 2011. he's seen it and said it was pretty bad. hopefully they'll get it right, or i'll just have to get another current gen.

^ It was probably the Biante. I knew it would never make it here, it's too extreme of a design for the NA market.

Most sites I'm seeing are pointing to a 2011 model year revamp, so I could wait another year to bite the bullet.

Does anybody else expect the 5 to get the same exact treatment that the 3 got? i.e. leave most things the same, give it a healthy dose of refinement and a bigger engine?

It should be a complete redesign like the 3 because it just received a refresh last year. I'm extremely curious about how the dash will look. I wonder if they're going to incorporate the two level dash design from the 3.

The bigger engine (well at least more powerful) is almost must. The Mazda5 handles very well, which sort of masks its pokey acceleration. That is the one weakness in an otherwise excellent car.
