Upgraded Intercooler (stage X)

on a stage 1, right from you turbo outlet the piping will go directly to the throttle body. stage 2 (intercooler upgrade) the out let of the turbo will shoot down directing the air through the intercooler then up to your throttle body. The intercooler will lower the tempature of the air. Colder is better:D This is why you are limited to a certain boost non intercooled. b/c the air will get too hot and cause detonation.

and this is a really dumb question but since im a turbo newb, im gonna ask it. what does the intercooler replace? not the intake, right? so then what?

- exhaust gases spin turbo
- air goes into turbo inlet
- air gets compressed and heated
- leaves turbo housing and enters intercooler where the air is cooled
- cool air exits intercooler and enters into through throttle body to intake manifold

so on and so on

thanks for the info. so whats the difference between this FMIC and the standard one that comes with the stage 2, in hp? and i could still get hp gains with the FMIC without turning up the boost right?

You would not get any hp gain using this over the standard intercooler.

If you do not run a boost controller, you'll actually see your boost level decrease if you feed the wastegate from the compressor housing (due to pressure loss through the intercooler and other piping).

The standard intercooler will do what you need.

what does "stage 4" means?

http://illmatic.vwmafia.net/mili.html

This car has MAJOR plans for the future & he is constantly adding new stuff, so that list is never totally accurate. Oh, & in case you want a more general answer, Stage IV means close to 400whp & probably high 11s (still trying to convince him to go to the track).

So how much for the intercooler by itsself, can I send back the one I have and pay $150?

Terry - does it bolt right up to the old FMIC?

I'm concerned about the endtank inlet placement...wouldn't they be better off in the middle more? Do you have pics of them mounted in a car?

What's the pressure drop/efficiency compared to the older ones?

Any decreased throttle response?
