UNICHIP ENGINE MANAGEMENT - Answers from Jack at unichip.us

If you wanted a more accurately tuned chip why couldn't you get your car dyno'd send the tuner all the slips with mods on your car at the time of the dyno. This way out of the box it'll be ready for whatever yourt mods are and tuned to fix or run with you A/F ratio... This is what I did with the SHO when I got a new ECU (totally different circumstances), but it's simple enough, saves time getting it tuned specifically for your car and no headaches of having to send it back if it's off a little bit. With a list of mods and a good dyno sheet, I'd think they have enough information to properly (or REALLY close to) tune for YOUR car.

I don't think people understand how little 875 dollars is for a mod like this. There is a local shop in New Jersey (ida automotive- these guys make some of the concept cars for ford) that does their own thing that is almost exactly the same as the unichip, except they dyno tune it for your specific car and you can tune it yourself afterwards with a laptop, and they want $1200. And even that is a good deal. It just doesnt make sense to ask for individual maps tailored for each customer while charging only 875 dollars. In addition, unless the place dyno tuning the car has every mod on the list and an msp to try it on, simply sending them a list of your mods will still be a guesstimate until they actually get your specific car.

I don't know if I want to spend $900 on this mod or use towards a downpayment on another car. I hate the way the MSP drives. It buckles like a crazy horse at half throttle in 2nd gear. I wonder if this chip will fix that?

I'm sure you'd gain an exceptional improvement in throttle response.

Why does the reply state that our small turbo is only capable of 9 psi? I know there is a point where it yeilds no return between levels but isn't that above 15 psi? What is mine doing when at 10+ psi?
Its not that the turbo isnt CAPABLE of pushing higher PSI, its the fact that its somewhat dangerous.

But we all take chances don't we?

I think 9-10 psi is still "safe". I would be running that if I was not afraid of kissing my warranty goodbye. I want to see if the car lasts at stock boost before I void warranty.
I've never been so afraid of modifying a car before!! My Hondas received all kinds of mods before without never worrying about warranty.

I agree that it seems a 20hp increase from a 50% boost increase doesn't really seem like the ECU is doing much on its' own. If it tunes our car properly so that it's safe to boost at that level, and allows us to pull it easily and untraceably to avoid warranty problems, well that's a good start, but does it help at stock boost as well?

I'd consider a chip, but I don't want something that changes my boost, because for AutoX a chip bumps you just one class up from stock, whereas changing boost at all blows you into full on modified class. I'd like something that helps as much as possible without upping the boost.

Can you guys do a dyno with a map that doesn't increase boost? =]

Jack,

I still have a couple of questions hopefully you can answer. Since so many of us are flashed, are you going to do maps for a flashed car? I've heard you might have to find an unflashed ECU to get this mod. Also, since this chip raises the boost roughly 3psi without tapping the wastegate line, what would those of us with MBC and EBC do? Would we have to go back to the stock config on this? Raising the boost will require a completely different program. I do agree that we shouldn't expect too much from this chip as was previously stated, but a daily driving setting (setting A) with a race setting (setting B) at about 13-15psi (which we would have to adjust our MBC/EBC to) would make this a must have mod. Most of us aren't expert tuners and could not safely tune a standalone, and a mod that allows us to run higher boost in a "safer" manner would be a great addition.

I havent read all the posts on this but this would get rid of the sorry hesitation we are still getting even after the flash, correct?

20 hp and an extra 30 ft lbs is nothing to laugh at. You're really only getting an extra 25% at the most in added boost. You're only increasing it 1.5 psi. ,stock is 7.5 max press.

explain this to me cause Im confused. So if we get the Unichip product, upon purchase we tell them the mods we have and what the 2 map setups should be OR this thing comes blank and we have to take it to a local unichip tuner?

It really comes down to whom you purchase it from. iON and Corksports are both tuners so they have resources to program a chip for different add-ons using test data from their own parts (FMIC, exhaust, dp, etc). I'm not sure who else will sell the unit but if they are local, you may be be able to have it custom tuned for your exact vehicle.

call your local dyno's alot of them can tune unichips, i have several friends who can. we used them in subarus alot. anyone near turboxs can have them do it.
I would actually like to know who can tune these. There is a TurboXS shop in Huntington Beach I have contacted about other turbo upgrades. If they can also tune the Unichip, that would be sweet. That way, any time I have them make adjustments to my boost level, exhaust, hard pipes, BOV, they can make the adjustment to my Unichip. Let me know if that location is the one you were talking about. I need to know if this is going to solve my problems before I shell out that kind of money. If I sell these engine components from my show car, I may have the money and finally be able to get this. Thanks for the help!

hmm 900 bucks to rid lag... seems very excessive but i think its gonna be worth it, ill begin saving since my friend sold our project car.... goodbye ae86....
