uh oh...auto tranny trouble

Something's amiss with my tranny. It seems after 2nd gear, it gets confused and jumps to 3rd for a second, then back to 2nd...and will stay in 2nd until I get off the gas, then it'll sit in 4th while I cruise at about 60km/h. Then the O/D off dash light started blinking.

I pulled over to read the manual...it says something electrical has gone wrong, and I should avoid driving the car. I'm calling the dealer tomorrow to see what's happened. I hope it's an easy fix (computer reset?)...I'm going on a 2 week road trip next week! When I restarted the car, the O/D light wasn't blinking anymore, but it still wouldn't shift properly.

Anybody else have anything like this happen? I've got about 10,000kms on her.

Let us know what the dealer said was wrong.

Let us know what the dealer said was wrong.

That is very interesting.

Well, it's not good news...

Service guy called a few minutes ago and said I need a new tranny. He said it's pretty strange - the computer codes didn't say anything was wrong, and all the fluid pressures were good, etc.

Anyway - they're being really good about it. I bought it from an out-of-town dealer and they towed it there this morning. (Normally Road-side assistance will only tow to the nearest dealer, but I wanted the people I bought it from to do the work cause I trust them and they said they'd handle it) I told him I'm going on vacation on Monday so they're flying the new tranny from Toronto and should get it tomorrow. If all goes well, I should have my car by Thursday or Friday. Just in time for vacation! *knock on wood*

I KNEW I shouldn't have posted a reply on what's gone wrong with the car since we bought it...that's ALWAYS a jinx for something bigger to go wrong :p

All fixed.

The work order didn't have much info on it...I think I read that the tranny oil was burnt, but the pressure was good.

Service dude said this was the first repair on a P5 tranny that they've done.

From initial phone call to having the car back - 72 hours. Most importantly it's back in time for vacation!

Humvee, sounds like you have a dealer that really cares about their customers.....if I were you ....I would stick with them, and recommend them to others as well...

Good Luck and Have fun on vacation.

The wife got to drive it home from the dealer, I tried to tell her that it may not be safe yet, and that I better be the one to sacrifice myself...but she wouldn't hear of it.

But...I just took her out of a spin (the car). Tranny seems tighter...if that makes sense (a good thing). Also before, shifting from park to Drive or Reverse there seemed to always be a bit of hesitation and some soft noises. I just chalked it up to being an automatic (I drove a stick on my old car)

Those noises+hesitation are now gone, and everything seems perfect.

Hats off to Neil and his crew at Auto-City Mazda in Steinbach, MB
for getting the work done in time for us to leave on our vacation!

My minor complaints:
1) They didn't offer me a loaner car. I didn't need one, so I didn't ask, but I think they should have offered.
2) I'm not so sure they treat their women clients as fairly as they treat the men...just a feeling I get by the way they answered my wife's questions about the tranny.

Anyways - I'd still tell ya to buy a car from them, and then have them fix it if things go wrong.

tranny problem

i also am having a little truoble with my manual. sometimes my baby wont let me shift into reverse but only does this once and awhile.

My 93 Civic did the same thing sometimes. I think this is "normal" and if you just let the clutch out and back in, you should be in business.
Someone with more mechanical know-how should be able to explain it...as I've heard an explanation, but I don't remember it.

 I've noticed the same thing happening with my automatic tranny lately. The only thing I haven't experienced is the flashing O/D light. I have 23,000 miles on my baby.

Any word on the bodykit from wings west for the p5? I only see the kit for the mp3.

Fellow mp5ers, feel free to email me for chat.

Auto Tranny Ghosts

Hey Guys,

My Silver5 does some weird things too with its auto tranny. I wanted the 5-speed, but with the way things went with the deal on getting this car, I had to settle for the automatic(thought that would be ok to have since my beater car is a 5-speed). Anyway, about 1000 miles into the ownership,,,,Sometimes it wants to really hold on to first gear before going into second...It only does it once in awhile but it is VERY weird when it happens and of course does not do it for the guys at dealer service.....And sometimes it really "jolts" into 3rd gear and other times it is so smooth you cant feel it.....Its as if it has some very confused computer chip in it.......Any thoughts from anyone????????

thanks,,,,,

Yeah that sounds like what mine is doing once in a while. And I totally agree with the fact that it never does it for the guys at the dealership. They all must think I'm one insane chick or somethig. Grrr.

I take away all the nice things I said about the dealership fixing my car. Looked under the hood yesterday and saw that I got a REFURBISHED Tranny. Can you believe that?! A refurbished Tranny after the origianal broke at 12000KM. Can they do that? I'm gonna call them to see what exactly they did. Underneath the motor on the right side (looking down on the engine) There's a part with a large metal REFURBISHED tag on it. I'll take a pic later, but that's gonna be the tranny right? (I haven't had any other major work done, so it HAS to be).
Anyways - NOW at 30,000KM and OD won't engage. The light doesn't come on, and the tranny won't shift down. The light DOES come on in Park though....Strange.

at least they offered replacement.
I want nice service department. My dealer is always giving me crap, and think i don't know anything about my mp5.
Good thing Im a member of forum , I have learned so much!!! no more taking crap from service or parts guy from dealer.
:D

It is normal to offer a refreb tran in cars, and they are normally just as good as a new one. Its cheaper for them, and you if were to pay for it. Had a refreb one in my old Saturn and it actually ran lot better than the first one.
Shouldn't give you any problems being a used on, since they are all rebuilt.

Well...I'm the last one that wanted to bring this thread to the top again....My 3rd tranny has just been ordered. This second one almost lasted a whole year! woohoo

3rd gear problem again...would start jumping around from 2nd/3rd.

Times like his make me miss my Honda.

Yep something else going there, I'm at about 20k (miles) and no problems what so ever. Plus I generally take windy roads on the way home using the sport shift.

I have 41,000 miles on my auto and i have made some mods as u all can see and i havent noticed any problems ...knock on wood. What u should have done about the tranny is buy a bullitproof tranny or their tranny parts...torque convertor...etc...once a tranny goes it seems like it is never the same. Had one go on a buick skylark...big surprise. In my opinion though the Japanese tranny is much better suited for high reving and hard driving than its american counterparts....not in this case i guess...well good luck
