im from pa, and i dont know what the legality of having cats removed from your car are. so does any one know if i will be ok, legally, if i remove one or two cats from my car. and if i was to get pulled over for any reason would i have any major penality issues? some one told me the penalities are in the thousands, is that true?

You are forbidden to tamper with or modify any cars emission system within the first 50K miles (for on-road use). Whether a cop is going to look under your car, and arrest (right) you for it if he notices both cats are gone is questionable. I am joking, you would of course not be arrested for that. But it is against the law, which is why every emission system on every new car is actually under warranty for 50K miles.
The biggest problem you would face is emissions testing (you would not pass, especially not in PA). There is also the issue of noise, something a police officer could indeed cite you for. In fact, I myself thinks it's very annoying and have no problems with cops ticketing folks for running test pipes or open pipes.

I suggest you look into hi-flow cats if you are concerned, that's what I'm doing for my racingmazda setup soon

ok, i'm gonna have to get on my soap box for this... sorry guys.

i have a moral dilemma with removing both cats. here we are, always bashing on SUV's for their low mpg and high pollution. yet when you remove both cats, you're polluting more than an SUV. face it. this engine will not all of a sudden be oober fast without its cats. turbocharging the car will give larger gains with removing the cats, but at what ends?

go with high flow cats instead.

In Pa you won't pass emmisions (assuming you have them in Philly, i have them in my county) with out at least one cat. From what i have3 read, you should be able to pass with one highflow cat, but im not sure if anyone has tried it. You should just get a high flow cat in place of your second cat. In Pa i have heard with no cat's you can get a hefty fine, but i dont know anyone it has ever happen to. I would assume you will be alright without one, jyst dont go for emissions with out one.

Easy way to tell if your county has emissions...look at your windshield. Two stickers means you have emissions. One sticker just safety. The month before I bought my car I moved from a non-emission county to one with emissions. Damn it......

i have two stickers on my windshield, dame. my next inspection isn't until june of 04, so i'll have some time to be without cats before i'll end up putting them back in for the inspection. thanks alot for the info fellas. (rockon)

yea just swap em out...i dont care about polluting, etc...all that big deal about the ice caps, and ozone layers, and yet it didnt make the front page when they actually researched and photod the ozone and proved all that s*** was FALSE.

here's where i got this article:
http://news.ninemsn.com.au/World/story_51019.asp

AFP - The Arctic ice cap will melt completely within the next century if carbon dioxide emissions continue to heat the Earth's atmosphere at current rates, according to a new international study.

"Since 1978, the ice cap has shrunk by nearly three or four per cent per decade. At the turn of the century there will be no more ice at the North Pole in summer," one of the study's authors, Ola Johannessen, told AFP.

"If the CO2 emissions continue to accelerate, that may occur sooner, but if we cut them back the process will be slowed," said Johannessen, a professor at the Nansen research institute in Bergen, Norway.

Observations of the Arctic by satellite show that the polar ice cap has shrunk by one million square kilometres over the last 20 years and is only six million square kilometres in the summer.

just remember most of the people that write those stories are biased and want you to believe what they believe...remember the fact that over the last twenty years how many more cars do you think are in the world...they dont factor that in...or that there is more industry in the last twenty years...etc etc...you dont see the senators trying to pass those emissions bills pushing their mercedes limos off the nearest cliff do you?

hey search for a sound bite in the video section of my setup without cats and the header and without a silencer.

no no... that story supports the removal of cats. see, cats convert unburnt hydrocarbons, nitrogen oxide and carbon monoxide into carbon DIoxide. so what we get is less smog and less acid rain, but a whole lot more carbon dioxide... the stuff that's leading to the melting of polar ice caps. when a hydrocarbon burns, it produces carbon dioxide and water as byproducts, but since our engines cannot burn all of the gasoline, there are "other" products that result.

so now do we let our cars emit carbon monoxide (that cannot be reformed into oxygen through plants) or do we keep both cats and have them convert these byproducts to carbon dioxide? maybe we shouldn't be clear cutting so much forest then? it's a smoggy situation, to say the least.

now if only those hydrogen burning engines were worth a damn, and didn't melt themselves into a smoldering pile of aluminum, then we would only have H2O as a byproduct.

but alas.....
