Anyone running a turbo with the P5's sport A/T? High-boost's looks like an excellent package (pretty safe for engine, that is) but how would the stock A/T handle the extra torque? Can it be upgraded and how?

nothing else to do today except dream of mods. Snow, snow, snow.

the tranny slips - keep the boost under 4.5psi. Might help. Here is the deal. You need to go really easy on it. I was boosting 8-9psi. It was fun, and highly addictive. I was starting to have the tranny slip once in a while when I got on it, or let the revs get high.

But then my engine blew when the stock rod bolts gave out. It's happenned to a few other members of this forum. Be careful. If I was going to turbocharge my car again- the first thing I would do is invest in a 2nd engine, and then forge the internals. Blown engines are not exactly uncommon in this community.

To be fore-warned is to be fore-armed.

That is not always true. The FS engine has weak rods, but if it is well tuned and kept under 6800 RPMs it will take 12 psi safely as long as there is no detonation.

We recomend running 6 to 7 psi on automatics.

usually way under - I would use the auto shift feature to shift at around 4.5k to 5k.

Foot off the gas, tap the shifter - ease back on the gas. Felt awesome.

just for the record, I kept it under redline.

I remember you wrote on your story "how my engine blew" that the engine over reved when the tranny was slipping out of gear.

I have seen N/A FS motors blown because over reving.

I think the only weak parts are the rods. Stock pistons will take a lot of abuse and boost unless detonation is present.

Hey do I hear a group buy for Auto tranny Turbos??!! i'm down!! still debating about the whole boosting an auto issue.....even hearing about one bad incident is discouraging enough especialy since I only have 6K and am still under warranty...

If you are still under warrenty i wouldn't bother turboing your ride..Wait..Do external mods..

About the Auto Tranny's and Boost..I would really suggest not doing it..

Why you may ask?

Simple..Do a search..and you will find that everyone who has a turbo w/ an auto tranny has either blown it..or having problems...

The auto Tranny's not made for High Horsepower! Tranny cooler will help..But truthfully A Level 10 Tranny will be more supportive!

But if you really want to do it..I would suggest 1 of 2 things!

1. Swap out..and get an Manual Tranny First!

2. Don't Boost above 4.5psi (Which really defeats the purpose of a turbo) and make sure you get some tranny cooler!

Juan, I'm curious, how many FS engines have blown on you and what were the causes?

ddogg777,

I have been working with FS engines for over 10 years. Since 1992 when this engine came in the 626 we have been playing with them. We broke two of them. The first we over reved it and broke a connecting rod, the second we over boosted and just broke two pistons. After then, we found out what the limit is on these engines and no more broken engines after. About 120 cars, with the FS engine, are running with our kit installed by us.

I have seen some N/A motors blown at the race track (road Race) that just brake rods when downshifting and overreving the engines. Not our cars, since we only work on turbocharged engines. In South America, where we do most of our business, this engine is very popular in Mazdas and Fords.

Cool Juan, That is some good work! I figured you would have blown a lot more than that...

Thanks everyone. And, yeah, I read the stickies. Seems like I'd be better off with a cai and catback exhaust for a safe (but little) "boost". I'll probably continue with handling mods- next will be 17" wheels with 215/40's.

The best solution is sell the kids and buy that Volvo S60R. Yeah, I said Volvo-hope that doesn't get me kicked off the forum! lol.:p

I can help, I have the HiBoost turbo and can tell you that is plenty of fun to boost the auto. Need to find my "kill an Integra" thread. But one thing I didnt do is drag race the car. I only did highway speeding. But I also boosted past 10 psi most of the time. Hit a top speed of 147mph and can definetly tell you that the HiBoost kit is the one. I did all this, but I also understood the limits of the tranny, never blew it, did slip sometimes, and I'am trading my P5 for an MSP as soon as I can. But not because of the auto tranny messed up, but because I got addicted to speed and it would be cheaper for me to trade than to swap or build a strong tranny.

For everyday use keep it under 6 psi and you should be fine. I loved the auto, since I didnt need to shift :D while the other cars did.

Hey, Pirahna- nice ride. I checked out the last set of pics which show you with an Injen CAI and I couldn't find the turbo anymore. Still there? or different car?

I was thinking if I shifted with the stick and let off the gas in between it might be ok. But, (Juan from Hi-Boost- you might want to answer this one too!) if I floor it in 4th while in manual mode will it still be too much torque for the tranny or will it hold in that gear?

Just wondering, does the BOV make the Pssfftttt sound even with an Auto? or do you have it recirculated as a BPV?
