turbo smoking -> possible solution?

i have been doing some research and thought maybe adding a restrictor to the oil return line on the turbo may stop the seals from leaking by reducing the oil pressure coming from the turbo. i know they do this with t3/t4 turbos to save their turbo seals so perhaps it would work for us? anyone with a smoking turbo want to give it a shot? or anyone want to give their thoughts?

I have heard that oil catch cans are hit or miss, but that our seals go bad from a pcv deficiency and that krank vents have 100% stopped smoking in some cars that smoked before. I don't know, I am waiting to hear of a MS3 or MS6 stop from kranks.

Subbed to see if anyone thinks the oil restriction mod helps........

had a catch can on mine and it didn't solve the problem. but i can't test my new theory cause i sold my downpipe cause i couldn't put up with the smoking issue.

I had a bit of smoking from time to time. After long idle, 20 minutes. Seems to have been solved by going to Red Line 10W40 oil. Have noted a performance improvement based on seat of pants tests. This is a group V oil made from plant and animal fats. Have also used RP and Amsoil and Mobile 1 in this heavier weight to good effect. But seems the Red Line is giving best results. noted zero consumption in 4,000 miles. Drive high speed 85 - 100 MPH daily to work 75 miles one way. current repeated mileage is constant 25 MPG running for fun ride. Have read a lot about fuel dillusion and liked the Red Line very low ash and deposit formation, as opposed to group 3 and 4 synthetics. At $9 per quart it ain't cheap. But i tend to drive the hell out of the car soooo.
Only mods are shift bushings, rear engine mount, and Mazdaspeed CAI. Hit 28,000 miles today, one year anniversary.

for those of you with the smoking issue, try a 40 weight oil before you blame your turbo seals and see if that solves the problem. a lot of people with the issue have had it resolved by going to the 40 weight oil.

I was running a 5w-40 Total oil with CAI, BPV, and test pipe, and would experience faint smoking while running for longer than 10 minutes. Switched back to Amsoil 5w-30 full synthetic and haven't had a problem since.

well mine smoked pretty good at idle when i had the cp-e catted downpipe with Pennzoil Platinum 5w30 oil then i went back to stock downpipe and its gone. But this week I'll be switching to AMSOIL 5w40 euro spec oil and then installed a brand new cp-e catted downpipe, so we'll see what happens.

I almost bought that euro-spec oil when I made my last purchase. It was actually cheaper than the 5w-30, and the Total I was running just got too damn expensive.

From reading on here, it sounds like our cars all need a slight amount of back pressure to function correctly. With mine and the test pipe on, it would smoke a little, but I took it off and took it to the dealer and they couldn't reproduce the issue. I'm gonna see if the smoking comes back in the near future.

just go to the dealer and get your turbo replaced before you are out of warranty. It is a tried and true fact that its the seals, MAZDA Know this, and the new turbos that go in have better seals tested to not leak like the ones that are in now.

Stop trying to fix it, it may end up not smoking now but it will just start up eventually and get worse.

yeah well replacing the turbo doesn't always fix the problem. i would try the heavier weight oiler. it is actually reccomended in ausie mps 6's
