Okay...i have a mp3 and i want to turbo the car...i know two companies that make kits for the mp3 to run 5-7psi w/ stock internals. does anyone have any ideas on what set up i should do, how much psi i can run on stock internals, and if it is worth it?

mike

from what I hear, 5 to 7 psi is about the limit for stock internals

I wouldn't know if it is worth it since i don't have a turbo myself...

i turboed my car. on 7psi with a bs turbo kit thrown together i made 195whp and 202tq. i went almost 100traps in the 1/4. it was a huge improvement from 16.0@84. i cant tell u if its worth it to turbo cuz i dont know hom much u like the car and how much ur willing to spend but i like it, it was worth it for me

i'd say it's worth if you have the money, expect some issues since you have now modified the car.....i have an auto p5 and it's not the same car...i have the MAM sleeper kit and it has made this a whole new driving experience!! oh, and at 5psi it's probably pushing 160...i'm going to get it on the dyno this spring.

i love the mp3 i just want more power...but i started to think today...would it just be easier to swap the msp motor and tranny?

mike

Don't bother with the "MSP motor" the actual block is the same, and all the turbo parts are restrictive inefficient crap. It wouldn't be worth the effort. You'll want to replace all the crappy parts in the end anyways (intercooler, exhaust, manifold, BPV, intake, ECU, etc.).

Tranny is the same except maybe the LSD. Do the MP3's not have the LSD? If you got that, make sure to look into having the housing welded to reinforce it more.

I've been running 8psi for over 2.5 years with my MPI powered MP3 and made over 220whp for over a year and a half, until I moved to AZ. It definatly can be done if you do it right. You NEED to have fuel and timing control, like what the MPI gives you. Spend the money and do it right, proper management will allow the motor to hold.

Build yourself a kit..I was collecting bits here and there, took about 8 months to gather all the odds and ends, when it was all said and done I think it cost me between $1000 and $1200 usd. Most of the parts were gently used and all from various protege's If your not in a rush..and dont have deep pockets, do your research and you'll be force fed before you know it! :)

THe MSP kit is always a good cheap alternative. if you can find someone on the forums selling one used, or piece it together with some after market you could save a lot of money.

yea...i'm down with that bro...see i'm looking to get around 180-230hp but i don't want to do any major internal motor work.

YUP!!!! stock tranny too, with a better clutch of course. I have about 5k in the kit, but things are much cheaper now. I think the key is the MPI tuner piggyback and the J&S safeguard. The MPI is $695 and the J&S is around $500 with the sensor.

Just to inform you, we have the kits available and ready to go. We have had the kit available for 2.5 years and it has been very sucessfull.

In Texas, you can run as much as 7.5 psi on the MP3 or 11 psi with the P5 ECU.
The kit is a bolt on units and comes with everything. It has a ball bearing turbo, cast manifold, Haltech F10X fuel managenet unit (pre mapped), Front mounted intercooler(now bigger core 24x7x3), high quality silicone couplers with HiBoost logo, Oil lines, spal AC fan, intake system with a 3 inch open end air filter and everything needed for a clean installation.

For more information, please e mail me at info@hiboost.com

the only thing holding me back from getting your kit (i've been shopping, sporadically) is your log style manifold... I want your turbo kit, but with MAM's bull horn Turbo Manifold... hell.. I'll probably build my own with a littlee from both...

Not knocking the kit, but the ECU shouldn't matter if you supplied an EMS that controlled timing and not just fuel. I wouldn't run 11psi on a P5 with no timing control anyway, that's just bad news waiting IMO!

mike, when you go turbo find a p5 that plans on staying n/a and switch ecu's with them. the p5 ecu is better for turbo'd vehicles and the mp3 is best for n/a, so its easy to find someone to trade with.
