Turbo Exhaust?

you'll need to reposition your cylinders so they oppose each other and operate at a different pulse cycle, if you want the MS3 to sound like a WRX or STi.

No seriously, it won't sound EXACTLY like the Subie's not matter what you do, because the engine configuration is different. They are boxer engines, not inline. Due to that, they behave differently, and have a different sound. Just like V6's and Inline 6's sound different. I had a V4 motorcycle, which had a TOTALLY different sound then the I-4's of the motorcycle world.
The issue with the exhaust:
WRX's and STi's ARE turbo, like our MS3 (and a bunch of other 4 cyl turbo machines), and with a large diameter, tuned exhaust system, the sound will be deep, growly, and free of the bumble bee fart can sound that most of the import world seems to sound like. You see, turbos by their very nature are great mufflers. They smooth out the exhaust pulses and use that energy to spin their other side - the intake turbine. So, what you get out of a turbo car is a vastly different sound. With regard to what your co-worker was saying - I'm not 100% sure, other then the fact that, yes indeed, the WRX you heard is turbocharged, and will sound different then the standard Impreza.
You want your car to sound deeper, and more growly though? Wait and see what comes out for the MS3. The stock exhaust ain't bad, but the aftermarket can improve it. It is almost impossible to go too big on a turbo's exhaust setup.

I have hear that the sound which subaru's have is mostly from the unequal length exhaust header before the turbo. I am sure some of the sound is from the engines configuration but the turbo is mounted towards one side of the motor and with exaust coming from both sides. The uneqal length gives it the burble sound. I heard that with certain turbo upgrades which would put a equal length exhaust on the WRX would give it a more convential 4cy sound. I think I read it in SCC sometime. Looking at the stock ms3 exaust manifold it is unequal slighty also. All runner are not the same lenght to the turbo. If you listen closely it does have a slighty burbled sound also. Not the same though. You could possable acheive a simular sound to a wrx but would involve creating a header with varying runner lengths simular to a wrx. Unless of course the cylinder firing order is greatly diffrent from an inline 4cy.Which is contributing to the sound. To much time and money for some noise. Just buy a WRX and pick up the awd. You wont look as kool though

Is it possible to buy an exhaust without the cat.? Or, can it be readily taken out? I was driving behind a TSI and every time he shifted, smoke came out the back, is this because he had no cat.? Will having a good 3" exhaust make my turbo louder? I mean I want other people to hear my turbo spinning...

Chances are that black smoke is from Venting his BOV. The rich condition will cause black smoke between shifts. I know cause I messed with this on my 95TSI. Needless to say I changed back to recirculate because of this and other drivabiltiy issures. I dont think there is an exhaust avalible at this point or even a downpipe with/without car for the MS3. You would have to do custom job at this point.
