Perhaps the cable is corroded at either end and snaped? In the meantime, fold down the rear seats and use a long stick or pipe to grab the escape lever from inside the trunk to pop it open.
drop the back seats and pop it with a hammer, remove the latch assembly, and delete the rubber latch sound dampener. You can find instructions somewhere on this site about how to pop it open with a screw driver.
Yea its common for the latches to bind with age due to an unnecessary rubber part on the latch assembly catching. Just wanted to put that out there in case anyone else runs into the issue.
