Trunk leak *warranty related*

So last week I noticed a leak in my trunk. There was 3 inches of water pooling in front of the right tail light in the little dip under the carpet. Anyway, at the time, I had aftermarket tails on, so I thought that might be the problem, so I put the stock ones back on, drained it, and dried it out.

We had a rain storm.

The next day, there was 3 inches of water in the same spot, so I made a service appointment for today.

I just got the car back, and they told me the leak was in a seam in the trunk, somewhere by the tail light. They told me they fixed the leak...then told me the warranty doesn't cover it.

I had also had them look at the front bushings, and order those, so the work order is still open.

So anyway, by the sounds of it they are going to try and make me pay for a problem that seems to be a defect in the car, and no fault of my own. They say the factory Mazda warranty I have on the car doesn't cover leaks.

Also, they didn't even drain the water out of my trunk. So there's still 3 inches of water sitting there, and the mechanic went home.

So I am trying to figure out what my next step is....

Perhaps call Mazda Canada and complain about a) the bad service with not even draining it b) not being informed something wasn't covered and getting an approval to do the work and c) to tell them they had better get ahold of the dealer and make arrangements for me to not pay for this repair, because I certainly won't be paying. I didn't approve any work I would have to pay for.

Any thoughts on this situation?

2003 MSP, 60,000km (38000 miles).

I have a factory Mazda extended warranty (not third party) that covers up to 7 years, 160,000 km (~100,000 miles)

i had the same issue with mine......dealer covered mine under warranty no problem....talk to the dealer as it's an obvious manufacturing error and not something u caused.....if not talk to mazda canada......don't know if they'd help or not though.....

its probably because the dealer was aware that you had aftermarket tails from taking it there previously before you re-installed the stock ones...at that point they can put the blame on that...and not cover it under warranty...

or if it was due to weatherstripping i dont think thats covered...

It wasn't the tails causing the leak.

They said leaks in general are not covered. Even gave an example of windshield leaks not being covered either. I think that's a line of bulls***.

And said that the leak was actually in a seam.

Either way, I was never called for approval to do paid work with a cost that it would be to fix it, and to inform me it wasn't covered.

Try talking to the service manager first. If they don't budge, Mazda customer service and tell them abou that BS. I had that problem and they fixed it under warranty. What was crap they didn't replace my rusted out scissor jack. :bs:

I left the car with them from 7:30am - 6:00pm.

There's no water in the spare tire well.

It's over on the thing on the right side against where the rear quarter panel is.

And it's frozen into an ice block now. They should have put it in their shop and thawed it and drained it. I'm going to make them do it on Saturday.

why dont you just soak it up w/ a towel or something to get it the **** out of there? you're just further damaging the car by leaving it in there to prove your point to them...

I took a big chunk of ice that freed itself up out this morning. There's too much in there to soak up. I have to jack it up to get to the drain plug so I will need to thaw it, and jack it up, and pull the plug. This because they didn't finish the job they said they did. Fuckers.

I will drain it though the first chance I get.

No wet-dry vac at home, no. Only at my parents' place and it's a pain in the ass to drive all the way there for that.

Anyway, I'll pull the drain plug. My point mainly was, they should have done it at the dealership.

Just got it all sorted out today.

I went in for the bushings to be replaced, and when I came to pick up the car there was a $128 bill for the water leak. I argued with them for about 10 minutes telling them I wasn't paying it because a) I wasn't informed BEFORE the work was done that it was not covered and b) They didn't finish the work as far as I was concerned because there was still water in the trunk when I got it back that I had to drain myself.

They tried to tell me "oh, no extended warranty (mine is MAPP -- Mazda warranty) in the world covers water leaks" to which I replied "This is the first time I've had an extended warranty in my bloody life! How am I supposed to know if I'm not informed? I should have either been told when I brought it in to have a water leak fixed that it wouldn't have been covered, or been called before the work was done when they found out it wouldn't be covered. If that had been done, I would have done the work myself!"

Anyway, after about 10 minutes of arguing, one guy got tired of me and just said "Let it go. It's not worth it." and they gave me my keys back and said they'd mail me a copy of the service record.

If they do, it's being forwarded to Mazda Canada, along with an official complaint about the dealership and details of my many problems with them.
