Transmission went out i think, please help

just bought the car about 3 weeks ago, has 86000 miles on it and i knew the guy that owned it before me. got some bolts on it and its been running good ever since i got it. today was just driving it like normal and was on a turn around under a bridge when all of a sudden when i put it into 3rd to accelerate i got no response followed by a very loud grinding noise.
had a couple of people look at it and when you start to accelerate just a little you can feel a lot of resistance from the tranny on the clutch and shifter. i know its not the clutch because its still workin fine. the grinding noise is very loud when you just try to drive it a little. motor still runs fine and you can tell the grinding is coming from the tranny.
im new to MSP so i dont really know what to do
please help
 
Welcome to the forum, sad to say but this is a common problem with the MSP. You have a few options, put in a regular diff, put in another MSP LSD, put in a new welded LSD, and last and most expensive is go with a Quaife LSD. Search the forums and prepare to be broke. Once again welcome.

This is directly off of *************.com hope Sam doesn't mind. If you get the Quaife you need the bolts. If you get the factory LSD get it welded, it's worth the cost so it doesn't happen again. Oh and buy an upgrade clutch while your at it.

i dont know if i have the money for the clutch too cuz im scrapping money together just to get the LSD fixed


It seems that this one is just the diff without the ring gear, I've never seen in sold like that before. Except for the Quaife that comes that way but then you need to buy the bolt kit.

Save the money for a clutch too so you don't have to pay again when the clutch does go out, I'd get a rear main seal also while you have it apart. I did the quaife, a custom HD clutch and the rear main seal and hope to never have to pay for those parts again. I did all the labor myself so it wasn't as bad but it hurt me in the pocket too.
 
It does have the ring gear it's shown that way to show the internals I guess. That's the exact one I have but welded.
 
so the shop just called me today and they said it was my clutch that went out.
ive driven a car before where the clutch went out but it never did this.
i hope the shop isnt wrong about it
 
What happens if you tell them to fix it and they are wrong, will they want to charge you for another round of diagnosis. By the way they are wrong, I had a bunch of friends that are all techs tell me it was the clutch on mine too. That's sort of how I got a friend to let me borrow some space in his garage, he thought it was the clutch and wouldn't take so long. Sucker! LOL
 
That is highly unlikely the way you described it happening. All they need to do is jack up the front end and spin one wheel then the other wheel should turn the opposite direction. If it doesn't it's the lsd!
 
my dad is a mechanic and he said my clutch was out also. i said dad im sure its the LSD and when we took it apart the clutch was fine.
 
yeah im gonna go talk to them tomorrow and tell them if they acttually took it apart or not.
im not trying to pay for a new cluth then turn around and pay for the LSD
 
Yeah, if you're putting it into gear and its not catching, and making a strong grinding noise, it will only get worse to state the obvious. It's your LSD, i just replaced mine. Good times...
 
thats the exact one im looking at and probably going to get.I just took my tranny apart the LSD had broken a piece at the base it had rubbed itself into a clump wich prevented the gears from makeing contact. Surpriseingly the only thing me and my brother in law found was that the main shaft bearings case was cracked and was about to go. Would have killed all the gears.

LOL my clutch looked good too, only some wear on the outside. My friend wanted me to put it back. Yeah right... I'm not putting that used clutch back in.
