Transmission Question.

I searched around for a while and I couldn't get an answer. I'm looking at a few Protege 5's and I noticed some have a standard auto transmission while others have what looks like shiftronic transmission is it exclusive to a certain year or trim line?

yep i think tiptronic started in 2003. But choose the manual transmission. Way more fun. p5 is already slow, dont go with the auto.

i would go with a manual but my girl also is going to drive the car. i already have a fun car *my tiburon* so the p5 is mainly just going to be a cruising car. maybe throw some bolt ons just for fun. I've always liked the looks of the p5's.

I think the tiptronic was an 02.5 upgrade. My '02 is a regular automatic. hotcracker, do you have the cup holders with the lid or without?

They offered it in 2002 & 2003. Not sure of the production dates or packages.
All options were only offered those 2 years in USA, including the whole car, lol. Sportauto was 2003/2003.5. 2002/2002.5 might of been an option but regular OD auto came standard.

If you're going to get an auto, don't go out of your way for a sportshift/triptronic/shift-yer-damn-self transmission. The latter doesn't really add anything to the "fun" factor.

Just my thoughts. I have the sportshift and never (well, rarely.....) use it. When in "manual" mode, the transmission will downshift automatically when slowing down or when stopped. This is fine- except if you don't have ABS. Let's say you're cruising along at a high 3rd gear or 4th gear speed. You have to hit the brakes.... HARD. The wheels lock up. The transmission thinks the vehicle is stopped and downshifts to 1st gear. Then you roll out of the brakes at a speed greater than 1st was ever intended for....... You'll overspeed the transmission and engine. The connecting rods in the 2.0L aren't exactly known to stay put at extremely high rpms.

^^I did this on an icy bridge one time. Luckily, because it was icy, the front wheels could slide some when I came off the brakes and it didn't damage anything.

Please correct me if I am wrong but this is what I have gathered so far.

Early 2002
Regular AT
Flip top cup holder
1st version of the rims

Mid '02 (basically an early 03)
Sport shift AT
Open top cup holder (a little deeper design, holds drinks better)
2nd version of rims

03
Same as 02.5s? Some of the 02.5 upgrades may actually be '03 upgrades I am not sure.

03.5
Spare tire sub (I think this was an option not a standard item)

I think cruise control was standard on all P5s.

Moon roof was optional.

Some P5s have ABS some do not, does anyone know if this was always an option or if it became standard at some point?

That's why you gotta brake without locking the wheels ;) (I know, I know, easier said than done)

Roof racks, 6 disc changer, cassette module, compass/temp/auto dimming mirror & leather fit in this somewhere too, just not sure where or when they would be considered option or standard. My prod date = june 2004 and it came with cloth, sportauto, spare tire sub, roof racks & single CD without cassette module.............

this happened to me as well, but i hydroplaned. Came out of it at 30mph, 1st gear at 6500 rpms. quickly put it out of manual mode.

i use manual shifting all the time. i like to time my shifts. auto doesnt let me get as high of rpms as i want. i just know now to put in in auto once i get up to speed.

also, i believe 2002.5 is when the manumatic auto came out. So if you were unlucky, like mahk, and bought one early... you were stuck with straight auto.

Thanks, I meant to ask if anyone know about the 6 disk and leather seats w/ air bags. I forgot about the cassette, rear view upgrade
