So rebuilt my 02 protege 2.0l motor and started it up put in the clutch put it in reverse and it seems to be stuck in reverse. The reverse lights come on, but the shifter is aimed at the lower left hand corner where 2nd gear would be? Im confused not sure if that means the trans is locked up. The trans was taken off the block for the rebuild. Please any thoughts, Thanks

This doesn't make much sense...check your shift linkage under the car something is not right under there!

Ive removed the shift linkage and checked it, nothing seems to be bent or broken. When I remove the shift linkage I can move the shifter back and forth but as soon as I reconnect it its right back where if started.

The h-pattern shift plate might be misaligned.

Can you get it into any other gears?

The only thing I can see to try is disconnect the shift linkage at the tranny and slip a screwdriver into the "T" and cheack that it moves into all the gears. Find neutral and twist then push up/down to get 1-2 then twist back and up/down for 3/4 then 5/rev. Maybe the "T" was bent or the bolt where the linkage mount attaches to the tranny is bent?? Also check to see that your shifter wasn't rotated 180deg.

No, def cant get into any other gears. Tried disconnecting the shift linkage and the screw driver idea on the T where the shift linkage connects. It didnt move at all with or without the cluth in. The H plate its that inside the tranny or outside?

Your sure you can't move the "T" at all? It takes quite a bit of force without the leverage of the shifter.

Ill double check it. Thats the thing, I put a screw driver through it and tried to move it but i didnt apply much force. Ill try it again here tonight and see what happens.

note:
--When the t-shaped rod is fully pressed forward (third gear) or fully pulled backward(fourth), there will be no side to side movement.
--When the t-shaped rod is in the center position, you should be able to rotate it CW (push for first, pull for second) or CCW (push for fifth, pull for reverse)
--Again, it'll take a good bit of force due to the knotchyness of a couple shift sliders internally.

Update: ok so there is no movement what so ever in the T where the shift linkage connects. Even with a good amount of force still no movement. Not sure what that means but Im guessing its not something Im going to be able to fix myself.
