Ok, so I replaced my LSD about 9 months ago. And the other when I was driving home from snowboarding, my car slipped out of 5th gear like 4 or 5 times on the way home. I figured the car was low on fluid or something and that I could fix it when I got home, except all of a sudden it wouldnt go into 5th at all and was grinding horrendously even when not in gear. I coasted to a burger king and had it towed the next day. When under the car I noticed the drivers side axle was like 1/8th of an inch out of the trannsmission. So i pounded it in and assumed maybe the car was super low on gear oil becuase of that, and filled it up with what I had in the garage. (about 1.5 quarts)

So i started the car up again and when I let out the clutch at all the grind came back. It is a horrendous sound, like something it broken in there. So I pushed it into the garage and put it on stands and pulled the end cap off by 5th and reverse to take a look. (its worth noting that I could not get the car into 5th or reverse at this point, but 1-2-3-4 worked fine. So i figured maybe the shift fork on 5th and reverse was bad or something)

Anyways, So I had my buddy go through the gears while I watched the transmission with the end cap off and 1-2 went fine. But I noticed when he hit 3-4, it bumped the fork a little for 5th and reverse. So I started thinking that little lockout plate for reverse was ****** up and some how getting hit when he was in 3 or 4. So when I told him to go back to 1-2 and then directly to 5th, it went straight in with no issues.

I was trying my best to at least diagnose the problem before I went through the hassle of pulling the transmission if I didn't need to, So i was hoping someone can give me and idea of what I am dealing with. Thanks for any help.

Sorry to say but it sounds like you need to rebuild the transmission.

the oil likely leaked out of the shaft and then the heat wrecked the trans.

if it is making noise all the time, it is not going to go away.

Yeah thats what I am thinking. Does it sound to you like it is possible that the little L shaped channel (I call it the reverse lockout- but I guess I am not sure if thats what it is or not) is broken in there. I guess my idea is that somehow it is rubbing against 3-4 (which is the grind) and when you shift 3-4 it knocks it in which prevents you from going to 5th-R, but when you go back to 1-2 it knocks it back out. If that is the case and I see that it is messed up, is it safe to rebuild the tranny without this little plate in? I dont think I would go through the hassle of ordering a new one, if it isnt necessary. I distinctly remember that thing kept falling out when I tried to put the housing back on my tranny with the new lsd on, like it was loose to begin with.. Does this sound possible to you?

I agree with brian. Its the same thing as when you have an engine that's knocking because of bad bearings or or bad rings. You might as well rebuild it or replace it with a "healthier" trans from another msp.

A manual transmission is much more complicated than an engine. I have only slight personal experience with rebuilding them. MAXXMAZDA might be able to help you more

send him a PM with a link to this thread.

Well, I decided **** it and pulled the tranny tonight. I ran out of kerosene and I live in michigan and didnt want to ruin my burton jacket so I froze my ass off all night. Nor did I have my dads lights I normally use, and I couldnt seem to find half my tools, so it really really really sucked, but I got it done. But now im sick of looking at it so I havent actually taken the tranny apart yet. I guess I will tomorrow.

If the trans was run out of fluid, your bearings are more than likely toast, as well as where the gears ride on the main shaft. Really, you need to take it apart and post up some pics. We'll see if we can figure out what happened.

Dead in the water for today. I cant get the lock nuts off for the life of me..I must have put them on good last time. My dad is dropping me off his impact tomorrow, Ill post pics then. Side note: when I spin the nuts you can hear a audible squeal, presumably the bearings. However, I cannot hear the "grind" that I hear when the car is running.

The only thing I see wrong, and Im not even sure if its wrong, is that the bearing that rides the main shaft was loose. If I am not mistaken those are pressed on and shouldnt just come off like that. I cannot find the source of the grind (I assumed it would be something physically broken)

So I dont know if thats good news of bad news. I found some metal shavings around reverse but no real obvious source. If you need a specific or better picture let me know.

You should put up a NSFW warning on that link. The host that you have used has Pornographic Pictures coming up as thumbnails at the lower section.

IMO, with what you have said and what I am seeing, there is a lot of damage likely caused by friction and heat.

You might want to see the help of a shop.

I did not notice anything when I posted them, but I added the tag. Thanks. I believe I am just going to part this car out, knowing what I know now. I need a more reliable DD than my MSP, and I am pretty sure ill get more money from parts than I can from actually fixing it and selling it, if you take into account the cost of fixing it as well.. I appreciate the help

It wasn't really the cars fault, it was the previous owner more than anything. He sold me a car which was hanging on by a thread and I didn't do a lot of research about MSP's to know what to look for when I bought it. The LSD was broken and re-welded, etc. Anyways, anyone who is reading this be on the lookout for a part out thread once I get some days off and time. Its been real guys, thanks for all the help you've given me, either directly or indirectly over the past year.
