Transmission failure or other options? 2015 Mazda5

My wife's 2015 is having some transmission troubles, we bought the car used about 100k miles ago, at 30k miles, so currently 135k miles on it. When we got it the fluid was already burnt and stunk, so we did fluid changes every 10k miles for the next 4 oil changes. But, while the fluid doesn't come out smelling burnt it gets black fast. Just last week I dropped the pan and installed a new filter and fluid and what came out looked more like old motor oil than transmission fluid and I know the shop that did the work had ordered the replacement fluid from Mazda.
Currently what its doing is that the car will sometimes not want to start, like its dead, I've replaced the switch on the front of the transmission twice in the last 10k miles, each time it made things just the tiniest bit better but not much of an impact. At times when she's driving the D light in the dash will disappear, when she does the car makes a little noise and loses some power but it only lasts a few seconds. Putting it in reverse, reverse won't always connect so when you step on the gas it just revs and then slams into reverse. A couple times it has started to reverse and then slipped out of gear. Yesterday, being stuck in beltway traffic for over an hour it started to rumble. At this point she's looking to replace it and feels that the transmission is just failing. I'm hoping for a hail mary solution to avoid a car payment. Especially since when I dropped the transmission pan there was no signs of metal shavings or heavy particles. Are these symptoms of a toasted transmission or are their other solutions we're missing?
