i have a 2003 mazda protege 5 automatic and im changing the trans fluid and
i was wondering if i can put dextron 111 on the trans

the owner's manual says Mercon V or equivalent (e.g., Dexron III).

I use valvoline maxlife Dex/Merc
Although they say they're compatible with both specifications, the Mercon V specification is far ahead of Dexron III, so you should get the stuff that says Mercon V, but not *only* Dexron III.

When I had my protege I used Mobile 1 Mercon V and it worked extremely well, although it was expensive. Specifications count more for ATF fluid than motor oil, so nearly any Mercon V fluid is going to work well (mostly because it's already synthetic and the original Mazda fluid was Mercon III/IV)

sportshift?

If you have the sportshift, mazda recommends a long life fluid. Your BEST bet is to go with the Mazda M5 fluid available at the dealership. It's about 8 bucks a quart, though, which is the same price as the best synthetics. Fluid is a hot topic on these boards- you might as well go with what your owner's manual recommends!
