Tranny on the fritz...

Ok....sometime last year....or maybe the year before, I had an accident. Hydroplaned head on into a high curb. Kicked the front suspension back into the frame...tore up a lot of stuff. So after the initial repairs, I had it back and forth probably a dozen times pointing out stuff that wasnt fixed due to half-assdedness. (We all know the dealer can't get sh*t right on the first try.) All the while, I keep hearing this juggling noise in my suspension. I take it back, they fix something, the sound is still there, I take it back they fix something, the sound is still there. On and on. My insurance company tells me that they and the dealer, and other mechanics cannot find the source of the problem and that there is nothing they can do. This is bulls*** of course. Then my insurance rep tells me if I can find a mechanic that can locate the source of the problem then they will proceed. Well to make a long story short...turns out it is something called a Carrier Bearing in side of the tranny...and I KNOW its bad due to the accident. One of the mechanics told me that this was the source but I didnt buy it becasue he said is was due to wear and tear. The car is only 5 years old! bulls***....its because of the accident, because I started hearing noise right after i got my car back from the dealer after the initial visit. So....what do I do now? Talk to my insurance rep and make him get it fixed? But a new tranny for $700 and put it in myself, or can this bearing be replaced within a reasonable amount of money? It's leaking but not that bad. I have already replaced one output bearing seal so far. That slowed it down, but it's starting to leak more again. Help!

any internal work on the tranny will cost you big time. If you're doing it yourself it's time consuming, even with the right tools. Set aside a couple of days that you can be without a car and bum rides. your best bet is to try to convince insurance that the accident caused it, not daily driving. Your rates have already gone up because of it, might as well try to get as much on the same claim as possible. good luck

how does he know its the tranny? dont fix something thats doesnt need to be fixed. make sure its the tranny first. cuz it would be big lost if it wasnt. MAYBE (not saying to do this) go to mazda ask them to check out the tranny first... i doubt they will believe u when u say it didnt happen before the accident... n ya it is wear n tear. ur better off buying a used tranny if they dont cover it.

You can pick up a used tranny for a few hundred bucks, throw an LSD in there and you're at around $700. That is a hell of a lot cheaper then having someone rebuild it for you. $700 is what I paid for mine, I bought 03' forks and bearings and that was less then $200 more. You can do without the forks if you want to save money. But worse case, 1k will get you a new tranny with an LSD.....if you do all the work yourself.

Well, I don't know what the noise is for sure, but if it is in fact a carrier bearing, then it's a $40 part. However, once you get that trans apart you may find more problems.

A used trans is not a bad way to go, especially if you let your current trans go for cheap to put it towards the new trans.

Do you have any trans experience?
