Traded a CX5 for CX9

I bought a GT cx5 in sept of 2013.... Was really happy with it...but after a 12hour trip at thanksgiving had major back problems ever since.... Had booked appt w the chiropractor.... At Mazda Sat for oil change and we happened upon a cx9... Had not looked at this, as I wanted something smaller, w good gas mileage.... Well, I did not want to get out... My husband suggested a drive.... It was like sitting on a cloud! We came home w it... It is awesome, All the features I love about the cx5 but major Cush comfort.... Wish it were not quite so long.... We really don't need 3rd seat, ( empty nesters) no kids to cart... Wondering how the gas mileage really is? My husband says my back is worth the extra gas....

Welcome aboard. No back problems in a CX 9, just "right foot problems." It takes very little right foot, as you now know, to get some serious zoom zoom going

Don't feel too sad. I live across town from you and drive a 2013 touring FWD. With combined city and highway (285/75, etc) driving I routinely get 20 to 21 mpg. When I've had a full tank of gas on a pure highway, long haul I've gotten close to 25 mpg. I'm careful not to drive it like I stole it. However, my driving is far from granny territory as well. Most highway driving is done using cruise control set around 72 mph.

Sounds like you and I drive similarly and I can get a pretty consistent 25 on the highway, driving at your same speed. One major key, I've found, is to keep the tires inflated to the proper PSI. But then that applies to every vehicle.

Wife is the daily driver and mostly in the city, and it's stuck at 15.8 mpg. And she's a fairly slow driver.

Congrats on your new CX9! We love our CX-9, but wish the fuel economy was a little better. At one point, I had considered trading it in on a CX-5, a Toyota RAV4, or a Hyundai Santa Fe. Ended up deciding to keep the CX-9 though, just too many creature comforts to give up in order to get a more fuel efficient little suv I even briefly tried to talk my wife into test driving a Mazda 6, she wouldn't go for that, lol.

Our FWD 2011 CX-9 is mostly driven by my wife for work commuting, groceries, etc. She was getting mid to high 15 mpg. Over the past few months, I've noticed that she is getting mid 16's mpg, just about to hit 17mpg. (16.90mpg last tank, woohoo!) Car now has 22k miles on it.

On our road trips (to the same location and back) we would get 22-24mpg, mostly interstate. For the last road trip, we got 24.10 and 24.20 mpg. The improved fuel economy seems to coincide with my last oil change, which is when I went from GC 0w-30 to M1 5w-20. I love the GC oil, but decided to try out the lower viscosity M1 5w-20 to see if fuel economy would improve, which it seems that it is. Either that, or the car is finally getting broken in, who knows. I track our mpg with an application, I ignore the computer...which seems to be at least .5mpg pessimistic anyway.

I've had my 2012 CX-9 Grand Touring (FWD) since 11/30/2012 and I've already racked up 24k miles! I drive 60-70% Highway and 30-40% City and average 18-19mpg overall. I drive from North GA to Anderson, SC roughly once every other month to visit family (about 280 miles round-trip). With the cruise set at 80mph, I usually get 20-21mpg on that trip with moderate to heavy A/C usage.

Did you get the FWD or AWD (All-wheel-drive)?

We got our GT in September and drove from Ft Worth, Tx to Denver for Thanksgiving. I drove the entire way only stopping twice for gas. This is the most comfortable vehicle I have ever driven, and I have driven quite a fee cars. We looked at the CX5 but it was slightly louder than the 9 so for the extra $2000 we opted for the big brother and have been thrilled with every aspect of it.

We are thinking of moving to lake arrowhead area...do you like it? Is it too far from everything?

You may be disagree with me as you know your case better, but your back pain absolutely not necessarily was a result of bad seats in CX-5. There are many contributing factors that could result in developing symptoms of radicular (lumbosacral spine area) low back pain after long hours of driving and it could happen in any vehicle you may drive (even in CX-9). I can tell you this surely as a neurologist. LBP problem is multifactorial and just seats (as a possible culprit) cannot be blamed. Just my neutral opinion.

In any case it is already done deal and I hope you feel better now and enjoying CX-9!

As long as don't commute to Atlanta on a regular basis, it's not that for from civilization. =) It's about 20 minutes away from restaurants and shopping in Canton, which is where I grew up. Most people move up here to get away from the traffic and hectic city life and it's a great place for that! I recommend it.
