towing a trailer with a P5

Does anyone know if there are potential problems towing a trailer with a P5? ..especially if the car is a manual? i've heard rumor that it is only safe (on the transmission) to tow with an automatic..but i am curious if there is other information out there. The approximate trailer (with stuff) would be around 600 to 900 lbs.

I've heard (although not read) that we should NOT tow anything with our cars. Crappy, but that's what you get with an econo car.
