Total newbie seeking advice from those who know a thing or two about P5 Audio.

Hi,

I'm looking into replacing my 2002 P5's stock set-up. From what I understand the P5 has 2 5x7" slots and 2 6"slots and a tricky-to-remove deck. If there's any of you audio buffs out there who have some time and a kind spirit, could you please verify if:

1) These following speakers will actually mount and work in my 2002 P5

2) These following speakers are worth the price.

For the front I'm looking into these:
SPS57C2_s.jpg

Alpine 5x7" 2-way Coaxial Speakers $129.99

For the back I'm looking into these:
P162C_s.jpg

Rockford 6" PUNCH 100W 2-way Coaxial Speakers $129.99

And for the deck I'm hoping to get something like this:
DEHP2900MP_m.jpg

Pioneer 200W CD/MP3 Receiver - iPod/SAT Radio Ready $158.00

I have a budget of about $600, I'm assuming that with taxes + wiring + install this will round up to about there. I'm very open to your guys' opinoin because, like I said, I know nothing about audio. I don't know of this equipment is even close to the optimum combination for my price, and if you guys can provide me with some advice I'd greatly appreciate it. (I took a tour through the $500 challenge page but I'm a little afraid of those suggestions not catering to my car, it seemed like a lot of people were referencing Mazda 3s).

Keep in mind that I'm Canadian, so if you have any online retail suggestions, I can only really follow your advice if they ship to Canada.

Everything you have there will fit.

Does crutchfield ship to canada?

Doing it yourself, the add ons that they give you make them a great value. Most shops will charge up to $30 for a dash kit and a wiring harness for the deck but crutchfield will send it to you for free. They also give you very detailed instructions.

Do not put alpine in the front and rockford in the back. In fack, I HIGHLY sugges leaving the rears alone. How often are you really in the back to listen to them?

Instead, use the money on an amplifier or perhaps a better set of front speakers. Also, do not randomly pick speakers from a catalog...your eyes can tell you absolutely nothing about them. Specs are pointless. Go and listen to different stuff at some stores and buy what you like the sound of the best.

I would do the Polk momo 5x7's, a 2 channel amplifier and the pioneer deck you have is good. I use the 4900ib which is on sale for $160

I do not know what will happen with the shipping, ect. If you do what to go the amplifier route, then you will also need an 8 guage power wire kit, 16 foot (5 meter) RCA cables, and about 50 feet of 16 guage speaker wire. Cardomain.com is WHORING stuff out right now.

Thanks for the reply. It's unfortunate that I made this thread before I did my research. I spent a better part of my evening browsing this forum and CrutchfieldCanada.com - I was pretty dead set on what I was gong to order until you brought up the point about new back speakers versus a 2 channel amp.

To be honest I'm not searching for a specific sound, I just want something that's better than these stock speakers. I'm confident that I could install the new deck and speakers myself with Crutchfield's help. But I can't find any reliable guides to installing amps/subwoofers. (I mention subwoofers because my brother told me that he has a couple of 10" alpine woofers and a 4 channel amp that he'll give me).

Now I'm looking at 2 pairs of these Sony 5 1/4" speakers (with a 5x7 grill thrown in for free, Crutchfield rocks).

And now I'm looking at this Kenwood deck - IPOD/Bluetooth/Sat Radio is a must for me.. damn 2 hour commute to work.

If I pick up the amp from my brother I'll still need the wiring so I'll give Cardomain.com a browse, but like I said I can't find any reliable guides and that makes me afraid to do it myself,

Actually now that I've thought more about it, I will follow your advice. For $100 less I can get one pair of the Polk Audio 5x7s and the Alpine CDE deck (no sat radio but Ipod and built in 16watt 4 channel amp).

People in the back seat can just scoot up.

buy no speaker before listening to it. Every speaker is different and so is every ear.
Also alot of people find aftermarket speakers lacking compared to the stockers as you WILL loose bass response from an aftermarket speaker.

Polk Momo FTW!!

Sucks that they cost a pretty penny, but, they're worth every cent. Go to your local shop and see if they carry them. I would up spending $2000 on the stereo in my wife's car cause she wanted it done that weekend we got it.

Went with Alpine Head unit, polk momo's with the tweeters and front and back(no, no tweeters in the back), 6 channel amp, and 10 inch sub. Also dynomatted the whole car and upgraded the wires. Yeah, it was expenssive, but, JEEZ!!! IT SOUNDS GOOD!!!!

Oh, and almost half the cost was the labor. Friggen Sound Advice

Sounds like they did you a favor on the install as the installation is what makes a great system, not the equipment.

You think that is a good deal? I thought it was expenssive. Hmm. Maybe I don't feel so bad about spending the money then. I'll try to get some pics of the system up later this week. Put all the covers over the speakers. The onlything visible are the tweeters in the door and the headunit. It's a stealth system.

Yeah, that's what makes me nervous about installing the amp/wiring to the speakers. I'm going to go and get my amp/subs/wiring done hopefully today and then when my speakers/deck arrive I can just plug those in and I'm good to go.

For the labor items you mentioned it sounds like it was priced appropriatly.
After all what good is a "deal" when a shop cus every corner and just hacks it?
That happens at vast majority of shop, espexialy ones that do "Free" installs. It usualy means they are not worth paying for.

There is a shop up here that charges $65/hour as they are a proven sound quality winner.
