Top Speed Run

Last night I was heading back home at around 3:00 AM and decided I was gonna top my car out.

Fifth gear, 190 KM/H and the car wouldn't go any faster. The highway was flat and there was minimal wind. I had to slow down a bit because of a car up ahead but when I passed him I got back on it. This time I got it to 200 KM/H. That's the fastest it would go.

After I took my exit, I heard a scraping noise from the bottom every time I would hit a bump. I pulled over, took a look under the car and noticed the bolt for one of the plastic covers under the car fell off and the plasitc piece was hanging on the ground. I tucked it in tight, so there shouldn't be a problem with that anymore.

My question is: Why couldn't the car go any faster?? Isn't it limited at 210KM/M?? Did the piece of plastic have an effect??

There are no limiters on the P5 for top speed. Several magazines tested the car and came up with roughly 118 (depending on the mag.) You're about right for stock.

yep it is ok for a stock p5,depending on the wind factor, height of the car, tires, road, the top speed is around 200-210 max for stock...

anyways, you know, with the roads we have here(quality)this is more than enough to either kill yourself,or to loose parts on the car like it did.(rlaugh)

stay safe!

I hit 220km/h and i swear thats where the limiter is...either that or it was the rev limiter... cause the car just stopped and felt exactly like how my old chrysler cirrus did when i hit 180 with it, thats where its limiter was.

*on 2nd thought... i dont think there is a rev limiter cause i remember going over 7000 once by mistake.

you know when you hit fuel cut, because your foot will be down, and all of a sudden it feels like you just took your foot off the gas.

top speed in a mazda6 s is 120 mph

It was weird though. The first time I couldn't pass 190, then the second time I was able to hit 200. Highway was flat each time, no windy conditions...

I've noticed that most cars have fuel cuts that aren't always the same. I took a Mercedes C320 out and topped out at 133, another day at 136, and another day at 139. My P5's fuel cut has about a 5 mph window in which it cuts. The only way I can explain it is that the ECU's might take into account net loads and its effects on the engine's physical limits. Air density and wind velocity could all add to that load, and there might be some kind of correlation between net load and top speed. If you think about it, with the added resistance of humid, thick air, our cars' engines will have to fight so much harder. Seeing that we have VERY limited horsepower, on some days we might reach our actual engine's limit at a lower speed, and the ECU will engage a fuel cut accordingly. While on an ideal day, our fuel cuts will engage not because of the net resistance fighting the engine to its capacity, but because of the actual speed limiter. I don't know, just a thought.

there is a hole thread on speed governers for our cars somewhere. those of us that had experienced it hit at about 220km or 132mph (there were others that didnt think our cars have one). also (for my car atleast) there is a rev limiter at just over 7000rpm

I have hit speed limit like 5-6 times and its just under 140mph when it hits a wall.

N/A is difficult to reach that because of power, wagon desing and wind speed/direction.

ha ha, i started that thread. i realised that i had my winter tires on when i did that. they're oversized so my speedo was out, and it gives you slightly taller gears and less power... i wonder how fast i could go with my summer tires?

Okay, so basically....

Stock: 190 KMH from what magazines have tested

Modded: 200 KMH+ depending on mods

205kph with SRI, thermal spacers, stock rims and stock sized tires, MP3 springs and the buzzy Mazdasport axleback coming home from Montreal.

LOL nice. SRI and H&R springs brings me to 200KM/H

i did my 220km run with just a SRI, slight down hill so that prob helped.

Ya downhill helps a lot. I hit a slight uphill at 190 and the speed sunk all the way to 180 in about 2 seconds...

I would like to tell you that doing this brings the car very close to the redline for a rather long time even if it's just an Up and Shutdown. Prolonged and Sustained high RPM will eventually/quickly throw a rod.

The tensile strength is not that good on these rods.

I'm sorry to sound like the Fun Police here, jus thought you might like to know before doing that again.
