Too much oil > Performance

Just curious. Usually when I change oil in my car, I add 4 quarts of Syntec. I read in my manual a while back that the official specs say it holds 3.7 Qs. I guess it makes sense to me that more oil in the engine would technically mean more resistance due to more displacement. Has anybody expirienced better performance with less oil?

Just changed my oil today, thought about it.

No, the amounts are there to maintain a proper level. You can probably go over a little, but why not just do 3.5/3.7 as it says? More important than how much you add is what your dipstick reads. When the motor is level and cold, check and see where it's at.

and if you put too MUCH oil in, you will have HIGHER oil pressure. too much oil pressure is NOT GOOD.

always use the dipstick. i learned that the hard way, filling 3.7 quarts and then seeing the dipstick ready way full, had to drain some out.

That does make sense I guess. I suppose I am just paranoid during cold day starts. I could bleed the oil I guess 1/4 of a quart.

did'ja stick in good old dino juice since you just had the rebuild? Synths are a little to slick to break in the engine properly....

I doubt the dealer sprung for synthetic. I'm sure they gave you good old dino.

also, something to remember here. When you overfill the oil you raise the level of the oil in the pan. This is potentially hazardous. I don't believe .5qts will do it, but I've seen overfilled engines actually lose oil pressure and seize up. this is because the crankshaft will actually dip into the excess oil in the pan and whip it into a foam. Once this done your oil pressure goes down. Not good for any motor....those rotary guys dont have to worry about it though!!
