OK, so I started pricing my car with options about a month ago and decided that all I wanted was a Titanium Grey Mazda 3s with the Moonroof/6CD and ABS packages. I got an online quote from one of the dealerships in my area stating that I could get it for only 2% over invoice..... SWEET (at least I think so). So a month goes by and I finally have my funds in order. I call the dealership to see if they had that exact car in stock. He says he has three lots to check so he'll call me back in 20 minutes. When he calls back he informs me that he doesn't have that car in stock and, get this........ I ask what I need to do in order to get one factory ordered to my specifications and he tells me "That wouldn't be possible" because Mazda is already "gearing up for the '05 cars." Great!!! I hope the guy's BS'ing me, so after I run some errands I stop by my local mazda dealer and ask them the same question and they tell me the same thing! I'm in Cali, has anybody else had this problem yet? My advice to all of you out there who are thinking about factory ordering their 3, HURRY UP!!! It may already be too late.

Those dealerships are definately BS-ing you. I just came back from the International Car Show at the Jacob Javits Center in NYC and I was talking to a corporate exec from Mazda and I asked her about the problem you had, purrrvert, and she said that's rediculous. They are still taking orders and will be for a bit after the 2005s arrive.

Time to call the dealership on their bs, or go find another one in the area.

Actually, it's kind of true. When you order a Mazda3 in North America it's not actually produced specifically for you. The vehicles that will be produced (colour + option combinations) have already been determined and a list provided to dealerships. If the combination that you wanted was one of those slated to be produced for your region then the dealer could "order" (i.e. reserve) that vehicle for you. In reality you were just reserving a vehicle that was already going to be produced anyway -- the vehicle was going to be produced, anyway, and wasn't produced simply because you ordered it.

A source on another board said, a few months ago, that Mazda had officially "sold out of production" for the Mazda3. This meant that dealerships wouldn't be able to get more Mazda3 orders than they had been alotted. If there's an unclaimed vehicle coming off the assembly line with the setup that you want and you can find a dealership that hasn't used up all of its Mz3 orders then they can still "order" (reserve) the vehicle for you. The problem is that some dealerships have already used up their alotted Mz3 orders, and I suspect that's what the deal was with the places that you visited. If that is the case, though, they might still be able to get the vehicle that you want from another dealership that has one or has ordered one. If your local dealerships all say that they can't get the vehicle then it's quite possible that either (a) there aren't any of that particular setup within reasonable range or (b) they're trying to push you to buy one of the vehicles that they already have on their lots.
