toll transponder on Mazda3 windshield?

I haven't owned a new car since 1992 and there's some newfangled modern conveniences I don't quite understand.

What is the purpose of the shaded area on the windshield behind the rearview mirror? This is the dark area made up of little black dots or maybe a black mesh. Is it to shade the area between the two visors, in case the sun is shining through there?

More importantly, is there a problem with placing a toll transponder in that area? That's where it's supposed to go but I don't know if the mesh material might absorb RF somehow.

The same kind of black mesh is around the edges of the front and black glass. What is the purpose?

Many thanks for your help,

The purpose for the stuff above the mirror is just to block the sun. Around the edges i'd say it's for the same purpose, but also so that you don't see the adhesive holding the glass onto the car. My old ranger had metal trim that clipped over the edges so that you didn't see that portion.

There shouldn't be any problem with putting the speed pass up there, however if there is then you can just put it to either side and have it work.
