2003 MP5-T
Alright, I've reached a point in my quest to diminish the stockness of my P5 where a decision needs to be made. Before I ask the questions, you should know the following:

Me: Male, 23 year old soon to be college graduate, girlfriend of 7 years, no kids.
Car: 2003 Protege 5 Laser Blue MT
Overview of mods so far: generally mild NA power-minded (I/H/E), 17x7 MP3 wheels (soon to be on car again), minimal exterior mods, 10" sub, amp, etc.
Overview of mods to come: Tokico HP's, Eibach Pro-Kit, Corbeau A4 race seat, various suspension upgrades, a few more exterior things (haven't decided yet).
Responsibilities of the car: daily driven, desperately needs to be the occasional track car (road track, not drag). No cargo hauling. Only one other person usually in the car.

Now for the hard stuff. I am tempted to strip the interior of the car except for the passenger seat and carpeting. So the side plastic pieces in the back, rear seats in their entirety, rear shelf (carpeted thing that lifts up with the hatch), spare tire, sub, and amp would all come out. From the front seats forward would stay intact (dash, center console, etc). So taking into consideration the above information and what others have done, what do you guys think I should do? Leave the car as it is which is in it's relatively stock form with the exception of the 40 lb sub/amp combo, or strip it as described? If you have stripped the interior of your car but still drive it daily, please chime in and let me know how you like it (do you wish you had not done it, was it the best thing you did, etc). I know this will eventually boil down to my personal preference but I would like to hear everyone's thoughts before I take the plunge or not. Thanks in advance!

I'd say no. A stripped car looks like crap inside, and you honestly won't gain a whole lot of weight reduction out of it. Think ahead - you may need to sell the car. If that happens, you'll want the stock pieces in it to help sell it. You could always store the stock pieces, but they'll take up a ton of room...

I've also considered this. I might leave the carpeting and sub\amp and try to save as much lbs as possible but still try to keep some road noise out and some bass in. Do it and let me know if its bearable or not.(yupnope)

and not to mention the road noise would drive you bonkers

What if it was just the rear seats, sub, amp, and rear shelf? The carpeting and rear plastic pieces would stay so no bare metal would show.

I would keep everything removed as well. I am turning into a pack-rat for stock parts because I don't plan on keeping the car forever (I see an Evo in my future) and I know the dealer/buyer generally won't give me a dime for any modifications I've done.

what's the point? so you won't be beaten by ricers who removed the interior pieces in their mothers' accords? road noise really increases when you remove the interior panels, and it's already pretty high with our cars to start. if you're just looking to lose weight get rid of the spare tire and jack. they weigh as much as all the plastic in the hatch combined.

Gut the Int., remove all doors, fenders, hood, and hatch, all windows other then front windsheild, dash, and last but nto least. Remove all seats and use a milk crate as a drivers seat... Pillow optional. oh wait we are talking about a daily driver here. lol

leave it alone except for when you decide to track it. Then remove the back seats, spare tire, jack and amp & sub for race day. After the race put it all back in for daily use.

Just take the amp and spare out.

When I took out the back seats one time before the track. I wondered why after cause they weigh next to nothing. Waste of time.

I just shipped my oem exhaust in a huge weird shaped box & just having the shelf out with the rear seat down made the exhaust twice as loud inside the car as normal & this wasn't even on the freeway. I can just imagine the crazy road noise/exhaust noise with all that stuff out. Just do the race day thing as stated above. I mean, what are we talkin about, race every wknd or once a month or 2? Just seems that daily driving would be annoying too often.

That's the only time it would make sense. Any other time = major rice. It's a P5!!!! It's not a track rat, nor would it make all that great of one. If you're gutting it in an attempt to lose weight, and less weight is like more power, don't waste your time. As someone else said, the back seats weigh nothing, as does the carpet as well. Our cars aren't quiet as is, you gut it you'll have a tin can full of bees on the highway, all for the sake of 20-30 lbs.

If an amusing daily driver isn't doing it for you anymore, why not just sell it for a sports car? You don't have any kids, all you need is a 2nd seat for the girlfriend. I know if I didn't have a child or any serious responsibility there's no way in hell I'd have this car. For what it is, it's great, but all things considered I'd rather have a sports car, in my dream world that is. I'm sure we could all make a long list of two doors for $10k or less that would destroy an MP5 on the straights and twisties, without destroying the interior and making it look like hell.(poke)

It sounds like the majority is against removing anything at all. I'm not too keen on the increased road noise and a deafening exhaust. I like the way my exhaust sounds but I don't want to go deaf going to grocery store, lol! I guess most of the interior pieces will remain intact judging by the accounts of those of you who have done this before.

It sounds like more and more things are being considered as "ricey" but you can't blame a guy for thinking about doing something with the intention of doing it a right and clean way. I agree with LED washer nozzles, monstrous twin-pillar wings, cut springs, cheap altezza taillights, unpainted body kits, etc etc to be considered "rice" and to be avoided at all costs. The PepBoys aftermarket aisle should not determine what your car looks like. But if something is done the right way, is functional, and is not hard on the eyes then I don't see anything wrong with it. Sorry for the rant but the opinion of "that's rice" is getting thrown about a little too much IMHO.

Many thanks to those of you who chimed in, it's helped a lot in trying to decide what to do. If only the + rep system was working.

Keep your car as is. When you pick up your evo for daily duty, strip the P5 totally and make it your track/project car.

You're not gonna gain much by pulling out stuff in the backseat. It weighs practically nothing as is.

If you want some gains, pull the spare tire and sub. And make more horsepower.
