To clean oil in a funnel?

I bought a funnel and a hose to change my tranny oil, well it's done and came to the cleaning part. My roommate said regular soap isn't good enough to dissolve the oil so I should use gasoline, well, is there a better alternative?

josh, can't you juat wioe it clean with a rag? (scratch)

Yeah, just use a rag to wipe the bulk of it out. Then I usually put mine down such that it stands on its own with a clean rag sticking through the hole to act as a plug.

or is it your food funnel. cause if it is just buy a new one

HAHAHA!!! If anyone eats out of a funnel, that's awesome.

Oh, I was thinking if I can use it again for engine oil. I don't want any residue from the tranny oil goes into the engine...
And my roommate was really thinking about drinking beer with it the first thing he saw the funnel and hose...and he dared me not able to do it...:D

You can pour auto tranny fluid into a crankcase. Some people use it to help get piston rings unstuck. A little bit of residue left on the surface of the funnel won't do anything.

Josh, I would recommend having more than one funnel. Get 2 large ones and 2 medium/small ones. With a marker, label one of the large ones "Clean" and the other "Dirty". Repeat for the medium/small funnels. I still wipe them as clean as possible with rags, but this way, I know nothing dirty will be heading into my engine or tranny.

As Diehonda mentioned, dish soap works really well for getting rid of grease and oil. And if the liquid stuff isn't working, get some stuff for the dishwasher and use that. It's far more powerful and will work great.

I guess I'll clean it with dish soap when I wanna drink beer out of it then...:D j/k
I forgot a little tranny oil in the engine isn't all that bad!
thanks for the advices!

Yeah I wouldn't eat off it after filling the tranny with it. But yeah, at least now I know what the dreaded "trans fat" might mean.

^ that'll work. I'd worry about the acetone in brake fluid eventually corroding or discoloring the plastic.

Almost all fluids you would pour through a funnel are essentially the same. Tranny/gear oil, differential fluid, AT fluid, etc should be okay if you get a residual amount of one in the other. Just wipe it down and call it a done deal.
