All tires are rated with a speed letter. This indicates the maximum speed that the tire can sustain for a ten minute endurance without coming to pieces and destroying itself, your car, the car next to you and anyone else within a suitable radius at the time.

And H rated tire is rated to 210km/hr were a V rated tire is rated up to 240km/hr.

Here are some tires i have heard good things about..
yokohama avs es100
Falken Ziex512
Nitto Neo Gens and
Toyo Proxes4...
out of these which would be the best tire for the stock 16in rim that provides little road noise, comfort, and durability>?

I'm putting a set of the Toyo Proxes 4 on mine this week. They're some bad ass all season ultra high performance tires. I recommend them for the all around durability, comfort, and performance.

of course you shouldn't be buying tires based on just looks. Allthough there are dumb people out there that ask me for tires that "look better" and perform worse?? go figure.
Those Nitto's and toyo's are very new, and there is nothing to back them up on performance yet.

The Falken Ziex side walls are a little mushy. However the Falken Azenis have very stiff sidewalls. I've auto-xed with Falken Azenis and Yoks AVS ES 100. Both tires perform well, Azenis have stiffer sidewalls, AVS ES 100 are little mroe quiet on the road. Both are very affordable. I use AVS ES 100 for Daily driving and Azenis for Auto-xing.

what do u mean that the Falken Ziex sidewalls are mushy?...
the ziex are all weather correct?

I think it means that the sidewall flexes a bit while cornering. But on the other hand, it should mean a softer ride. Yep, the ziex are all seasons

Ok got the Proxes4 today. I will mount em tomorrow. The sidewall is pretty strong, stronger than the Falkens for sure. The new Neo Gens have good reviews so far from the tuning magazines. The Proxes 4 was just released, and is an improvement over the old FZ4s. The sidewall is firmer and the traction rating is AA.

well, all i can say is we have been selling the Falken 512's now for over a year, and i have yet to hear one complaint about them.

I wish I could live in a snow free area like you.....:(

Yeah the toyo proxes are great in the snow. We just got 12+" down here and i did things my old dunlops couldnt handle. The dunlops used to always slip. And honestly the fair weather handling is as good or better with improved steering response. I cant say for sure if they are quieter since my system is generally on...

Haha snow free rocks! It does ice out sometimes maybe. Yup these Proxes 4 tires grip nicely! a vast improvement over the Toyo FZ4s. Ill have to take pics soon.

I, too, am thinking about the Falken Ziex-512's. I've also seen some Falken Ziex-502's. I've talked to a big chain tire place out here and they offer the 502's at a little lower price...speed rating is a touch lower and they offer a better treadwear warranty and their service warranty of free lifetime replacement, balance and rotation, etc. I saw the write up in consumer reports and these seem like a good all around tire. My guess is there are tires that do a little better from a racy performance standpoint, but I'm not sure how important that is to me since this is basically a daily driver for me. My concerns are good traction, nice ride, good handling, and as good as possible treadwear.

Has anyone put a 205/50-16 or a 205/45-16 on the stock rims of a P5? How does it fit?

I heard the sidewalls of the Falkens are not that strong. Any comments on that?

falken got stronger side wall than kumho, kumho are known of having a thin arse sidewall

both 712 and azenis is excellent choice(iam running kumho and bridgestone for my two cars)

azenis is MAD noisy before they break in, they are cheap, very grippy
the downside would be the durability(+ regular wear, camber, toe in, toe out, etc)
if you drive aggressively enough, they probably wouldnt last more than 20-25k miles

kumho is not as good as azenis, but it's cheaper and have a higher threadwear rating.

azenis is like the bandwagon stuff out there for the sport compact, cant go wrong with neither one

Hey this is a good thread for me, I've gotta get tires right now. I'm leaning toward Yokohama AVS in 205/45/16 on OEM wheels.

I've never done any Plus Sizing with my tires and I'm a little paranoid. Has anyone used that exact tire on a 2002 Protege? Also, does the lower profile tire make the wheel well gaps look too big???
