tip rattle

i have had my 3 for almost a year now and have had no major problems with it yet. it is my daily driver and love driving it. the only thing is that if i have my car running and go around the back i hear the exhaust tip rattling. at first i thought it was rattling because of my subs but a quick mute of the stereo proved it is the tip. how the hell do i stop the rattling without buying a new exhaust (that will be later down the road). it is embarrassing having a ghetto ass rattle like that. any suggestions would be greatly appreciated thanks

what is it rattling on? the bumper? is it a loose hanger? i would investigate a bit further to see what exactly is rattling

it's not touching or rubbing against anything, it just sounds like they used jb weld to attatch it to the pipe and it's starting to crack. i looked at the bumper and there was no sign and my hangers are all right. i'm just a stumped beginner.

ahh i see, you are saying the tip welds are not holding and its causing it to rattle... well take that s*** in to the dealership, they should fix that no prob...

i can see it now, i take it in and they tell me that my tip is fine but my undercarriage is falling apart and unless i want to Flinstone yabba-dabba-doo my car to and from work, etc i will have to shell out $$$ to get it redone. that would be crap....funny but crap. lol, i'm just trying to get some ideas maybe on how to temp fix it until i can finally convince my wife that letting me buy a cold air intake and exhaust for my car will give me better gas mileage. the farthest i've gone on a tank of gas was about 382 miles or so and i can't really imagine getting better than that. no mods either, purely stock.

with the 3i your best was 382... damn with the s model i got over 400 on my best tank... yeah i would just take it in and have them fix it... hell they may have to replace the whole exhuast or something and if they do, tell them you want an aftermarket one otherwise they will have to drop the subframe to put a factory back on....

Check to see if a rock is in the tip. I'm not kidding....sometimes rocks get thrown up and flys in between the exhaust pipe and chrome tip, which is tack welded to the pipe on the top & bottom.

i really appreciate the feedback from y'all. this is the first forum i have ever been a member of and i didn't expect responces this fast, this is awesome. checking to see if a rock had maybe been tossed up in there never even crossed my mind. the question is, how do you check to see? just grab it and shake? when the tip is cold, of course. i thought 382 miles was the best ever but over 400?! dang i guess that is something i have to look forward to. i will probably poop in my pants if i ever cross the 400 mile marker. another question is just about how many mods can you do to your car before you have to start worrying about voiding your warranty?

as far as mods go its all about what they affect... if you put on a cai and have a maf sensor problem, then you have to pay for it (or put your stock intake back on...hehe) if you get an exhaust and have o2 sensor problems you are on your own... if you get a short shifter nad have tranny issues they could try and blame it on that though...?? if you dump the turbo kit on it kiss the warranty good bye....

ok so going from stock to adding some mods, what is the cheapest way to get a good horse power boost while keeping the stock image? ultimately i would like a sleeper to beat the pants off these wannabe honda speed racers and show them whats up on the Mazda side of the block. all i want people to think i have is what they see.....exhaust, brake mod, and i want her to be as low as possible.

Just fyi, my 3s gets better mileage with a CAI. About 3mpg difference.

There really aren't any cheap ways to get any substantial hp gains. Intake is the only cheap mod and that's still around $200. Figure $500 for a decent exhaust. The only other things you can do cost big bux.

Unfortunately, your dreams of beating the pants of the rice-racers will probably go unfulfilled. Look on the bright side, though... you'll have a nicer interior and a better quality (and quieter) ride. (thumb)

while i most likely won't beat them in horsepower the majority of the ricers in my neighborhood are young kids that are more worried about how their cars look and sound rather than how they drive. most of them have to tap the gas numerous times just to get up their driveways so people will notice them. but when they try to show how fast they are they need to practice a little on their shifting (it's a bit on the granny side) so there may still be a chance for us

No joke, My HKS has a rock or two in it from parking in front of my house on the street (dirt road). When it rains it knocks rocks and crap up into my exhaust..
