Well folks this little blue wrx wannabe is about to hit the 35k mark and i was wondering, when the hell are we supposed to replace the preventive maintenence timing belt???? ( i seem to have misplaced my owners manual)

also are the mp3's like hondas that when u blow a timing belt the whole engine is turned to scrap metal?

for the first timing belt change do i need to use the whole timing belt change kit or just change the belt itself?

there are two things you could be talking about- the pulley system or the chain INSIDE the engine.

What chain inside the engine???

He's talking about the timing belt.

If the timing belt snaps, your motor will be fine, assuming your valves are within clearance specs. We have a non interference design.

According to the manual from my ES, I believe it said you inspect it at 60K and replace it at 105K miles. Mazda is now using extended life timing belts that don't require 60K changes.

i asked about if he meant chain because he said that thing about honda, i thought he might be referring to the internal chain, in which case, if it'd break, it'd be time for a new block, as the broken chain would damage a ton of internal parts.

There is no chain inside the protege engine. Cams are run off a belt drive from the crank, not a chain. Hondas don't use chains either.

just for clarification im refferring to the belt that goes around the cam gears, alas the timing belt.

on hondas if the timing belt snaps then the pistons hit the valves and FUBAR the cylinder if i understand correctly.

Are you sure our engine in non-interferance? Because the FS-03 was an interferance IIRC.
