Ok guys so usualy i have my music up loud and never hear whats going on with the engine... Well today i was with some friends on the highway and the radio was off, i started hearing this ticking sound, it is quite a fast tick and happens in any gear. It is more pronounceid when i push the gas down a little bit more (like when picking up the speed). I immediatly went home and checked the oil and noticed it was low. So i topped it off and it still does it. It happens in any gear and only when giving the car gas. Let me know what you guys think. Can you adjust the valves on the car? My mods are FMIC, ATP wastegate 8-9lbs boost, Corksport power series and SS AFC. Any help very welcomed!

ok guys ill do that, i noticed that while i drive in any gear and take my foot off the gas completely i dont hear anything but then as soon as i put my foot back on it it starts to tick again, it only really happens if i flutter the gas down a 1/8 throttle and back and forth it does it but when i take it off it goes away and if i push down more than a 1/8 it goes away. i know i have a exhaust leak at the mani casue on cold starts it makes a ticking sound, but its not like the same ticking sound that i am hearing now, this sorta sounds to be metal on metal ticking.

its not super loud its probably just the lifters.. they are loud on this car..

maybe not the manifold though check underr the car and see if the exhaust is rusted and about to break

the thing is that it only does it when giving the car 1/8th throttle. if i coast at 65mph in 5th with no gas it doesnt make the sound, if it was valve tapping/ lifters it would always make the sound wouldnt it? im going to get a flashlight and take a peak at and around the mani to see if i can see any black exhaust buildup on the block anywhere.

Ok so Im having the same thing happen to me,except my ticking is extremly loud. When im driving it stops when i throw it into N, but if i push the shifter even neer any gear it starts ticking. It all started when i passed some truck on the freeway and had to D shift from 5th to 4th and when i went back to 5th, it was tick.tick.ticktick. Now I must say that the noise does increase with RPM......

90 percent sure its an exhaust leak! either a cracked mani or bad gasket most likely! used to have this problem on cold starts but replaced the gasket and it went away!

I have a similar problem

I have a ticking sound all the time. I think it happened when I raced someone like an idiot. I had a vac leak due to a bad stock wastegate that was causing me to fail emissions. I took the wastegate out of the picture (disconnected and plugged the vac line going to it) so I could pass emission. I was going to a Mazda meet after a ruff week when someone wanted to race. I gnored him at first, then signaled that I didn't want to race. Finally I was like "f" it raced the guy. Because the wastegate was not inline anymore I think I overboosted and messed something up. Now I have a clicking sound. It sounds like its coming from the left (passenger side) of the engine. Someone told me it sounds like a possible bearing or camshaft issue. Has anyone know what it could be and know what I need to do to fix it based on that description?

Also the engine seems sluggish periodically, especially going uphill. I don't drive it for the moment in fear of messing it up more.

ok so the car is in the shop and it looks bad. the mechanic said that the engine is gone, it threw a rod in the 1st Cylinder :(
so now i'm left to decide, rebuild or replace. mazda quoted me 3500 to rebuild, and 4500 for reman engine and 5500 for brand new engine... does anybody know of a rough ball park to have it rebuilt, cost wise that is.. and in worse case senario, is it possible to put the standard 2.0 protege engine in our cars and nix the turbo(i found one localy for 800) opinions please :D

i say if you can get one from mazda for 5500 thats sick i thought it would be closer to 10,000 but if you want to turn up the boost get new internals but make sure there good not just some s*** aftermarket stuff

ok, so i have a cel for vcts (or whatever that valve in the IM is called) is stuck open. have there been any problems with those butterfly plates in there coming loose and ratteling? I could see that being the problem. becasue it only does it when air enters the IM.

This is what rod knock sounds like.

Which means your engine is already screwed. Quit driving or you will throw a rod out the block. Tow it home or to a shop, and have the internals pulled and get it rebuilt with rods/pistons while you still have a salvageable block and crank or pay a lot more to replace the entire bottom end.
