Tick, tick, tick, tick, tick BOOM! Lifters ticking?

so your taking it in, and they still say nothing is wrong?

also, there isn't a clutch in an auto tranny. you have a tq converter.
Pretty much although they do that for everything else. I haven't deemed them worthy to try and fix my transmission because I know they're just going to say nothing is wrong. I'm thinking of having a Ford dealer check it out and rub their verdict in Mazda's face...tq converter, clutch, whatever it is, it sticks and holds up the whole transmission.

Just thought I'd update: (on the transmission)
Tomorrow or Tuesday or sometime this week, I'm taking it over to my friendlier Ford dealer and have them check out what I'm talking about.

Once they tell me whatever they think it is then I'm gonna get a write-up and bring the car to Mazda. When Mazda says it's running fine...BAM!...I'll lay Ford's diagnosis on them and see what happens.

Hahahaha! I totally plan to. I may even have them take a look at my creaking suspension up front and slap that diagnosis on Mazda...at the same time! MUAHAHHAHAHAAA!!! (laugh)(laugh)(laugh)

OK so there was this girl that came by my house to visit and who I promised to go to her Lacrosse game but I had to get some stuff done first and didn't get time to head up and get it looked at...but today! Today, I'm heading up there. I'll post up what they say later.

Well I headed up there and stopped by Ford first to see if their service manager (who I'm also closer to than normal people should be) would do anything like he said...I just missed the transmission guys leaving. But he is going to try and find one of his old techs that may work for Mazda now and get me hooked up there.

Then I went to Mazda and my "buddy" (the service manager) came out and told me to leave it and they'd check it out today. I think there's a point where they look at you different and just pass everything off as ok cause I got it back and they said they didn't notice anything out of the ordinary. So either Mazda has absolutely terrible transmissions, it acted nice for them, or I hit that point where they don't actually inspect it and just write it off.

Anyways, I called Mazda North America HQ which is kinda close to me just in SoCal (Riverside, CA) and the District Customer Service Manager will be up here on the 11 and 12 of March so I have an appointment with him for the 11th to see what he thinks about it.
Now I have a file with Mazda North America...kinda coolish. Hopefully I'll get some unbiased opinions from this person when they ride with me to check out EVERYTHING that has ever been reported by me and not fixed. I'm also going to talk to him about Hayward Mazda's issues with negligence and why I'll never go back and Diablo Mazda leaving the door open in the rain for a good amount of time and making me clean up the lake of water it left on the mats and on the seats. In the end I think there should be some good that comes from it...I hope.

*fingers crossed*

ok so is this ticking yall are reffering to only happen when you accelerate? bc i recently just started hearing a ticking its very faint but it only happens when i accelerate?

Holy crap! This thread is still alive!
Sorry, it seems to be something the car does normally but it's whenever it's started from cold or been sitting for a while and started. If you hear it on acceleration only then it's something different. Granted, it does get more frequent on acceleration, it happens from start to operating temp. This is normal but if it only does it on acceleration then it isn't normal.

My .02

Since this thread is still alive I figure I would thow in my .02. I have had ticking in 2 mzr's on my ms6 (dont drive on flooded roads with a CAI). I got that warranty'd but thats another long story. After the water and before the boom 3k later I could tell that a rod was letting go. I could feel the knock through my clutch petal. My old mazda tech said it was the plastic intercooler making the sound so he put some foam under it and 3k later driving home from a/c @80 BOOM cyl #3 came out through my oil pan. On both engines I have had a tick and I have read on the other mazdaforums (i cant locate them right now). Some people have claimed that that is the noise of the stock cat breaking down. (sounds like bbs rolling around in a tin can) Or one guy even said it was a pulley bearing. And another simply found a loose pully bolt that needed another turn. I personally was hoping for the cat to be my problem. I just installed the cp-e dp (huge pita if you dont study the directions like a bible) and unfortunatly that was not my problem. While I had all the heat shields off I checked the exhaust manifold and found no leaks. Next I checked the tensioner and pullys and they were all tight.(I went with the trusty open ended wrench b/c of the lack of "ball space") Then I CAREFULLY used a long screwdriver to listen to the 2 pullys and found the runner pully to hopefully be my culprit. Tomorrow I'm going to buy some graphite spray and spray the tensioner and runner pullys down. Ill if that is the problem. I don't want to accept that an injector or lifter could produce a metallic tick. I know they are noisy but not coming apart noisy. My tick only occours at idle >900 rpm's. Ill keep you guys posted.

Thank you, a WHOLE lot. I could accept that it was the valvetrain bu teven for a brand new car it seemed excessively loud and I was still skeptical.
Keep me updated with what happens!

since this is a thread about ticking, i figured i would post about my ticking issue. though its not really a ticking, its kinda a cross between a knock and a tap. it only does it when the engine is warmed up, above 2000rpm's, and when it is putting power to the ground. if i rev the engine up with it in neutral or the clutch disengaged, it doesn't do it. and it doesn't do it all the time. just when it feels like making me worry.

this is a 4 door 2006 3 with the 2.3L engine and 5 speed manual transmission.

update: i checked it out a little bit more and its a constant knock/tick coming from the passenger side of the engine. from the accessory belt area. it just gets louder when i am accelerating or keeping a constant speed.

Hopefully you are still under warranty. I have not taken mine in b/c the dealer would be upset at my dp/ ems/ bov/ cai / wishbone mount / rear diff brace / etc. I'm not spending 3+ hours taking everything off to have the dealer tell me "We cant reproduce the customers complaint. " When I changed my water pump pulley for a lightweight one I was able to give an extra turn on the tensioner pulley bolt and my tick went away for a month or 2. Not that it is summer time I am noticing that It doesn't start ticking until the car gets hot. 20 Minz or so of whippin it. At the same time when I turn the a/c on I get the tick instantly. As of today I am convinced that the a/c compressor may be the culprit, but until it craps out or I hit 40k I am not going to the dealer. If your tick is getting louder / in sync with your rpm's as you have stated your engine may be starting to let go . Mine is more of a rattle in the accessory belt area that goes away @ 2k rpms +

Hope you can get some positive information from this post. Keep zoom~n

yeah. its still under warranty. i have not taken it in yet cause i only have the one car for me and the wife right now and the dealership doesn't give out loaners. but that problem is solved, my neighbor is gonna let me borrow his jeep while he gone for a class. :)

i checked out the ac compressor theory, and it doesn't change when the ac is turned on. i'm gonna call the dealer on monday and set up an appointment for my car to get looked at. and i'm gonna make the dude drive with me before i drop it off so i can show him what the car is doing.

Just to let you all know, I'm just selling the car. There's too many annoying everyday intermittent problems that the dealer can't find and it seems Mazda won't let me honor my warranty either so I'm passing it on and letting someone else deal with the car.

Good luck to all of you and hopefully you never have a car like mine! As for now, I'll probably never get a Mazda again.

sucks that you had a bad experience. i hope my car isnt going down the same path with my tick. though i'm the kind of guy that will just frankenstein the car to work. best of luck with your next car!

Thank you, I hope yours is something meaningless that won't affect it everyday. You sound like my dad though, 89 Cutlass...everything was wrong with it...he still rode on it up until 117,000 miles and 13 years. He had an 84 Cimarron that he didn't get rid of in time so it sat on our driveway rusting until some guy rang the doorbell and bought it for $30...he had to jump it to drive it home.
Thanks again man, the shopping experience will go a bit differently this time around.

i had the same sound, one mechanic told me that the valve lifter arent working, then i took it to the dealer and they replaced intake manifold and sounds went away, my car has 100k on it and sounds like it has 1k after manifold was changed, they said it was leaking and that caused the sound.. so i dont know if that was the problem but after it was replaced its super quite

How long ago did you get it replaced?
